Owen County (22-3) vs. North Laurel (20-3)

Owen County coach Devin Duvall started the following lineup: 6-7 Sr. Carson Williams, 6-1 Jr. Patrick Osborne, 6-5 Sr. Michael Dunaway, 5-11 Sr. Chad McDonald, and 6-1 Sr. Vince Toftness. North Laurel coach Brad Sizemore countered with 6-6 Sr. Kyle Jeffers, 6-5 Jr. Peyton Broughton, 6-7 Jr. Bryson Asher, 6-0 So. Brian Gray, and 6-1 Sr. Jaret Lipps.

Owen County defeated North Laurel 75-71 in an overtime thriller. The game featured Senior Owen County star Carson Williams one of the leading contenders for Mr. Basketball and North Laurel Junior star Peyton Broughton. There were 11 lead changes in this game and six ties. This game lived up to the hype as both teams and star players came to play and gave the fans their money’s worth.

Owen County shot 59.1% from the field including seven of 15 from the three point line. The Rebels connected on 16 of 22 free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 10 North Laurel turnovers. North Laurel shot 51.9% from the field including nine of 20 from beyond the arc. The Jaguars connected on eight of 10 free throws, pulled down 22 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 13 Owen County turnovers.

Carson Williams recorded a spectacular performance with 43 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Williams was 16 of 18 from the field including one of one from beyond the arc, and 10 of 16 from the free throw line. Chad McDonald added 19 points including five three point baskets and helped open up the interior for Williams with four first quarter three point bombs. Michael Dunaway pulled down six rebounds.

Peyton Broughton also brought his “A” game tonight and led North Laurel with 30 points including three three point baskets, three rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Bryson Asher added 14 points and Kyle Jeffers recorded 10 points and eight rebounds. Brian Gray chipped in with eight points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots.

Central (11-6) vs. Paul Laurence Dunbar (20-4)

Central coach Doug Bibby started the following lineup: 6-4 Sr. Anthony Southers, 6-1 Jr. Derron Douglas, 6-4 Sr. Daivon Thompson, 5-9 Sr. Brandon Wells, and 5-10 Jr. Devin Firman. Paul Laurence Dunbar coach Scott Chalk countered with 6-4 Sr. Darius Williams, 6-3 Sr. Justin Kelley, 6-5 Jr. Dontell Brown, 6-0 Sr. Jordan Lewis, and 6-3 Jr. Taveion Hollingsworth.

Dunbar defeated Central 67-65 in an exciting, well played game with a bizarre ending at the buzzer. The score was tied at 65-65 and Central had the ball with 11.6 seconds remaining but missed a shot and Dunbar got the rebounds. Dunbar attempted a long three point attempt and Dontell Brown rebounded the ball with his back to the basket and flipped it back over his head for the basket and the win at the buzzer. There were 11 lead changes and 10 ties in this game. Dunbar took a 53-46 lead in the final quarter but Central stormed back to tie the game at 63-63.

Dunbar shot 43.1% from the field including seven of 20 from the three point line. The Bulldogs connected on 10 of 15 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 20 points off 12 Central turnovers. Central shot 55.3% from the field including 11 of 19 from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets connected on two of four free throws, pulled down 24 rebounds, and scored 14 points off nine Dunbar turnovers.

Taveion Hollingsworth continues his stellar season for Dunbar with 26 points and four rebounds. Darius Williams added 15 points including three three point baskets and six rebounds. Jordan Lewis recorded six points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Dontell Brown chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.

Devin Firman led a balance Central scoring attack with 16 points including three three point baskets and four assists. Daivon Thompson added 13 points and eight rebounds. Derron Douglas also scored 13 points including three three point baskets. Brandon Wells recorded 11 points including three three point baskets and five assists.

Mercer County (24-0) vs. Lafayette (15-7)

Mercer County coach Josh Cook started the following lineup: 6-4 Jr. Dylan James, 6-3 Sr. Alijah Mink, 6-5 Sr. Malik Dow, 6-4 So. Trevon Faulkner, and 6-4 Sr. Will Hager. Lafayette coach Mike Mendenhall III countered with 6-1 Sr. William Watkins, 6-0 Sr. Harrison Lane, 6-6 Sr. Ross Jenkins. 5-10 Jr. Chris Wharton, and 5-10 Sr. Jaelin Jenkins.

Lafayette defeated Mercer County 77-59 in a game that virtually left a large crowd stunned. After all, Mercer County came in ranked Number #1 and undefeated and Lafayette had lost four in a row by an average of 22 points per game. Evidently Coach Mendenhall and the Generals didn’t read the previews and scorched the nets for 12 three point baskets to fuel the upset.

Lafayette shot 45.1% from the field including 12 of 23 from the three point line. The Generals connected on 19 of 28 free throws, pulled down 31 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 13 Mercer County turnovers. Lafayette held an astounding 37-2 advantage in bench points. Mercer County shot 42.2% from the field including three of 13 from beyond the arc. The Titans connected on 18 of 23 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored six points off 11 Lafayette turnovers.

Harrison Lane led Lafayette with 21 points including four three point baskets. 5-10 Jr. Jajuante Carpenter added 20 points including three three point baskets. 5-10 So. Eric Powell chipped in with 14 points including four three point baskets. Ross Jenkins recorded 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Dylan James led Mercer County with 18 points including three three point baskets. Will Hager added 17 points. Trevon Faulkner recorded 16 points and nine rebounds. Malik Dow chipped in with six points, six rebounds, and five blocked shots.

This was a marvelous day of basketball to honor legendary Coach Jock Sutherland who captured the 1979 State Championship with the Lafayette Generals and is a member of the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame. Also, congratulations to Lafayette Coach Mike Mendenhall III on his win today and for the quality of the event he put together today.
