Western Hills (5-2) vs. Madison Central (1-5) (Girls)

 

Western Hills coach Raymond Ritchie Jr. started the following lineup: 5-9 Sr. Haleigh Conley, 5-6 Jr. Katherine Mangeot, 5-11 So. Shelby Dews, 5-4 Jr. Alexis True, and 5-6 Jr. Montana Muravchick.  Madison Central coach Robert Cooksey countered with 5-10 Sr. Lindsey Johns, 5-10 Sr. Charity Mack, 6-0 Sr. Mallie Cornett, 5-4 Jr. Bailee Vanover, and 5-7 Sr. Kasi Schneid.

 

Madison Central raced out to a 17-9 first quarter lead on their way to a much needed 65-36 victory over Western Hills.  Madison Central shot 46.6% from the field including six of 14 from the three point line.  The Indians connected on five of nine free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and scored 26 points off 18 Western Hills turnovers.  Western Hills shot 29.4% from the field including five of 21 from beyond the arc.  The Wolverines connected on one of one free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored seven points off eight Madison Central turnovers. 

 

Lindsey Johns led Madison Central with 20 points including two three point baskets, five rebounds, six assists, and three steals.  Bailee Vanover added 17 points and three steals.  Mallie Cornett recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and also blocked five shots and limited Western Hills’ opportunities in the paint.  Kasi Schneid added seven points, six rebounds, eight assists, and two steals.

 

Alexis True led Western Hills with 12 points.  Shelby Dews added six points and six rebounds.  Katherine Mangeot recorded four points and eight rebounds.

Henry Clay (1-4) vs. Southwestern (3-1)

 

Henry Clay coach Eric Sanford started the following lineup: 5-8 Jr. Braxton Price, 5-8 Jr. Cheyenne Jones, 5-8 So. Destyne Jackson, 5-4 Jr. Alexis Lutz, and 5-7 So. Kiya Thompson.  Southwestern coach Stephen Butcher II countered with 5-9 So. Kallie Sheron, 5-8 Sr. Cassi Reed, 5-10 Fr. Regi Cundiff, 5-4 8th Grade Alexa Smiddy, and 5-8 Fr. Kennedy Harris.

 

Southwestern trailed 27-21 at halftime but rallied to earn a 54-45 victory over Henry Clay.  Southwestern outscored Henry Clay 19-10 in the final quarter to earn the victory over the Blue Devils.  The score was tied five times and there were three lead changes in the game.  Southwestern shot 34.1% from the field including two of 11 from the three point line.  The Warriors connected on 24 of 33 free throws, pulled down 44 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 14 Henry Clay turnovers.  Henry Clay shot 33.9% from the field including two of seven from beyond the arc.  The Blue Devils connected on five of 10 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 18 Southwestern turnovers.

 

Cassi Reed led Southwestern with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Regi Cundiff added 13 points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots.  Kallie Sheron recorded 12 points including two three point baskets and 10 rebounds.

 

Kiya Thompson led Henry Clay with 13 points and four rebounds.  Alexis Lutz also scored 13 points.  Destyne Jackson recorded eight points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Madison Southern led 45-43 after three quarters and pulled away for a 63-55 victory over Prestonsburg.  Madison Southern shot 42.3% from the field including 11 of 25 from the three point line.  The Eagles connected on eight of 14 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 16 Prestonsburg turnovers.  Prestonsburg shot 42.9% from the field including two of eight from beyond the arc.  The Blackcats connected on 11 of 23 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 19 Madison Southern turnovers.

 

Sam Cornelison led Madison Southern with 13 points including three three point baskets.  5-10 Sr. Conner Coyle added 12 points on four three point baskets and eight rebounds.  Marley Lawson recorded 11 points and seven rebounds.  Savannah Fallis chipped in with 11 points including two three point baskets and four rebounds.  Ashlyn Clark dished our eight assists.

 

Jana Jarvis led Prestonsburg with 23 points and four steals.  Alivia Slone added 13 points, 13 points, five rebounds, five assists, and five steals.

Pulaski County defeated Montgomery County by a score of 62-23.  Pulaski County shot 47.1% from the field including 11 of 28 from the three point line.  The Maroons connected on three of three free throws, pulled down 23 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 22 Montgomery County turnovers.  Montgomery County shot 26.5% from the field including two of 16 from beyond the arc.  The Indians connected on three of five free throws, pulled down 23 rebounds, and scored two points off three Pulaski County turnovers.

 

Jeriah Privett led Pulaski County with 14 points including four three point baskets.  5-3 Sr. Kyra Eads added 12 points.  5-5 Fr. Jordyn Stephens and 5-5 Fr. Haylee Ridner recorded nine and eight points respectively. 

 

Makayla Harris led Montgomery County with nine points and six rebounds.  Kaitlyn Barber added four points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Clay County defeated Menifee County by a score of 67-55.  Clay County shot 49.1% from the field including seven of 23 from the three point line.  The Tigers connected on six of nine free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 20 points off 15 Menifee County turnovers.  Menifee County shot 32.1% from the field including six of 22 from beyond the arc.  The Cats connected on 13 of 18 free throws, pulled down 39 rebounds, and scored five points off 12 Clay County turnovers.

 

Kaylee Mathis led Clay County with 23 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and two blocked shots.  Summer Parker added 20 points and seven rebounds.  Parker was 10 of 14 from the field.  Shelby Phillips recorded 15 points on five three point baskets and seven rebounds.  Kimberlyn Mills dished out nine assists.

 

Emma Hacker led Menifee County with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots.  Mara Walker added 14 points including two three point baskets, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Drew Evans recorded 13 points including three three point baskets.  Isabella Bean pulled down eight rebounds.

Madison Central led 41-28 in the final quarter but had to withstand a Henry Clay rally to earn a 45-42 victory.  The score was tied four times and there were six lead changes in the game.  Madison Central shot 45.7% from the field including two of seven from the three point line.  The Indians connected on 11 of 19 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and scored 10 points off eight Henry Clay turnovers.  Henry Clay shot 18.9% from the field including three of 14 from beyond the arc.  The Blue Devils connected on 19 of 23 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 23 Madison Central turnovers.

 

Lindsey Johns led Madison Central with 17 points and five rebounds.  Mallie Cornett added 10 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocked shots.  Bailee Vanover chipped in with nine points and four assists.  Charity Mack added six points and six rebounds.

 

Destyne Jackson led Henry Clay with 17 points including two three point baskets and five rebounds.  Braxton Price added eight points.  Cheyenne Jones and Kiya Thompson pulled down nine and seven rebounds respectively.

Jeriah Privett led Pulaski County with 16 points including four three point baskets, four assists, and four steals.  5-4 8th Grade Shelby Cothron added 10 points including two three point baskets, eight rebounds, and three steals.  Kyra Eads recorded six points, six rebounds, and three steals.  5-9 Fr. Haley Brock chipped in with six points, five rebounds, and two blocked shots.

 

Marley Lawson led Madison Southern with eight points and five rebounds.  Ashlyn Clark added seven points, five rebounds, and two assists.  5-6 Sr. Desirae Linville also scored seven points.

Southwestern pulled away in the second half to defeat Western Hills by a score of 82-54.  There were two ties and nine lead changes.  Southwestern shot 47.6%  from the field including 11 of 24 from the three point line.  The Warriors connected on 11 of 17 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 26 points off 18 Western Hills turnovers.  Western Hills shot 43.25 from the field including three of 10 from beyond the arc.  The Wolverines connected on 13 of 20 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored 10 points off seven Southwestern turnovers.

 

Kennedy Harris led Southwestern with 24 points including six three point baskets, four rebounds, and three assists.  5-9 So. Sydney Morris added 12 points and five rebounds.  Alexa Smiddy chipped in with 10 points including two three point baskets.  Cassi Reed recorded nine points, five rebounds, four assists, and five steals.  Regi Cundiff also scored nine points.

Clay County raced out to a 33-9 first quarter on their way to a 64-34 victory over Montgomery County.  Clay County shot 58.15 from the field including eight of 17 from the three point line.  The Tigers connected on six of seven free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 13 Montgomery County turnovers.  Montgomery County shot 28.35 from the field including two of 18 from beyond the arc.  The Indians connected on to of eight free throws, pulled down 23 rebounds, and scored nine points off 18 Clay county turnovers.

 

Kaylee Mathis led Clay County with 17 points, five rebounds, and five assists in only 16 minutes of playing time.  Summer Parker added 12 points and seven rebounds.  Shelby Phillips recorded 11 points including three three point baskets.  Taylor Asher chipped in with 10 points and recorded four assists.

 

Delaney Bromagen led Montgomery County with 11 points.  Makayla Harris added eight points and Lake Williamson pulled down seven rebounds.

Madison Central raced out to a 19-2 first quarter lead and got balanced scoring from all five starters to record a 61-34 victory over Montgomery County.  Madison Central shot 46.2% from the field including three of 13 from the three point line.  The Indians connected on 10 of 12 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 25 points off 22 Montgomery County turnovers.  Montgomery County shot 27.9% from the field including six of 22 from beyond the arc.  The Indians connected on four of 10 free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored seven points off 10 Madison Central turnovers.

 

Mallie Cornett led Madison Central with 12 points on five of five from the field and two of two free throws.  Bailee Vanover also scored 12 points.  Kasi Schneid added 10 points and three steals.  Taleya Todd chipped in with nine points and Charity Mack added seven points and four assists.  5-10 Fr. Jekauri McKeithen pulled down six rebounds.

 

Delaney Bromagen led Montgomery County with 21 points including five three point baskets.  Lake Williamson and Makayla Harris each recorded four points and five rebounds.

Kennedy Harris led Southwestern with 27 points including seven three point baskets.  Regi Cundiff added 10 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.  Alexa Smiddy chipped in with 10 points and six assists.  Casi Reed recorded nine points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Western Hills defeated Prestonsburg by a score of 53-41.  Western Hills shot 31.1% from the field including eight of 22 from the three point line.  The Wolverines connected on seven of 12 free throws, pulled down 40 rebounds, and scored 22 points off 23 Prestonsburg turnovers.  Prestonsburg shot 35.6% from the field including three of 12 from beyond the arc.  The Blackcats connected on six of 11 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored eight points off 15 Western Hills turnovers.

 

Alexis True led western Hills with 17 points and six steals.  Montana Muravchick added 15 points including three three point baskets.  5-7 7th Grade Leann Way chipped in with 10 points including two three point baskets and six rebounds.  Haleigh Conley recorded six points on two three point baskets, 12 rebounds, and five steals.  Katherine Mangeot added five points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.

Brooklyn Snow scored on a last second put back to give Pulaski County a 56-55 victory over Henry Clay.  Pulaski County led 18-7 after the first quarter but fought back and actually held the lead late in the game until the final shot.  Pulaski County shot 44.4% from the field including seven of 15 from the three point line.  The Maroons connected on 17 of 28 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 15 Henry Clay turnovers.  Henry Clay shot 33.3% from the field including four of 10 from beyond the arc.  The Blue Devils attempted 21 more shots (57-36) from the field than Pulaski County.  The Blue Devils connected on 13 of 22 free throws, pulled down 40 rebounds, and scored 20 points off 18 Pulaski County turnovers.

 

Jeriah Privett led Pulaski County with 14 points including two three point baskets.  Kyra Eads added 10 points including two three point baskets.  Brooklyn Snow added nine points and eight rebounds.  5-4 8th Grade Shelby Cothron recorded eight points, five rebounds, and four assists.  5-5 Fr. Madison Central raced out to a 19-1 first quarter lead on their way to a 67-43 victory over Prestonsburg and evened their season record at 5-5.  Madison Central shot 53.7% from the field including five of 13 from the three point line.  The Indians connected on four of eight free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 22 points off 14 Prestonsburg turnovers.  Prestonsburg shot 32.1% from the field including four of 13 from beyond the arc.  The Blackcats connected on five of 10 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 11 Madison Central turnovers.

Henry Clay nipped Clay County by a score of 48-47.  Clay County had a chance for the tie but could only manage one of two free throws in the closing second.  There were eight lead changes and eight ties in this game.  Henry Clay shot 31.6% from the field including two of 10 from the three point line.  The Blue Devils connected on 10 of 16 free throws, pulled down 36 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 19 Clay County turnovers.  Clay County shot 43.8% from the field including five of 13 from beyond the arc.  Clay County attempted 25 less shots (57-32) from the field than Henry Clay.  The Tigers connected on 14 of 17 free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 10 Henry Clay turnovers.

 

Braxton Price led a balanced Henry Clay scoring attack with 10 points including two three point baskets and six rebounds.  Alexis Lutz added nine points and five rebounds.  Kiya Thompson also scored nine points and recorded four steals.  Cheyenne Jones added eight points, nine rebounds, and three steals.  Destyne Jackson added seven points, five rebounds, and six assists.

Southwestern raced out to a 24-2 first quarter lead and was never threatened in a 69-31 victory over Madison Southern.  Southwester recorded 15 steals, blocked three shots, scored 38 points off 26 Madison Southern turnovers and limited the Eagles to 28 shots from the field.  Southwestern shot 55.8% from the field including eight of 15 from the three point line.  The Warriors connected on three of four free throws and pulled down 19 rebounds.  Madison Southern shot 39.3% from the field including one of four from beyond the arc.  The Eagles connected on eight of 10 free throws, pulled down 22 rebounds, and scored two points off six Southwestern turnovers.

 

Kennedy Harris led Southwestern with 25 points including six three point baskets.  Regi Cundiff added 12 points and two steals.  Casi Reed and Alexa Smiddy each scored eight points.

Conclusion:

 

Madison Central coach Robert Cooksey and his staff did an excellent job of organizing and running this event.  This was not a tournament format but a collection of ten teams playing four games over a four day period.  Madison Central, Southwestern, and Pulaski County each finished with 4-0 records, Western Hills, Madison Southern and Clay County 2-2, Henry Clay and Menifee County 1-3, and Montgomery County and Prestonsburg 0-4.  Madison Central entered this even at 1-5 and ended the week at 5-5.  Southwestern improves their record to 7-1 and Pulaski County improves to 7-4.
