40th Annual Rick Bolus’ High Potential® "Blue-Chip" Basketball Camp® 2019

Session Two

July 8-9, 2019
Georgetown, KY

©2019 by Ron Harrison

Introduction

The 40th Annual Rick Bolus’ High Potential® "Blue-Chip" Basketball Camp® was held in Georgetown, Kentucky at Georgetown College.

The camp director for this camp is Rick Bolus, who is entering his 46th season as a basketball scout and his 40th year as an exposure basketball camp director.  Rick Bolus started the Rick Bolus High Potential® Basketball Recruiting Service in 1973.  He is also a consultant for several national basketball tournaments, shootouts, and All-Star games.  Numerous colleges representing all levels of play subscribe to his High Potential® Basketball Recruiting Service.

There are two sessions this year:  June 25-29 and a mini-camp July 8-9.  This report will cover the second session, held July 8-9.  Each session also features speakers on recruitment and academics.  All players also receive mini-clinics.  There are mini-clinics for guards, big men, and 3-point shooters.  There are also optional competition contests as well as a written evaluation from the camper’s league coach.

Some of the outstanding players who have attended Rick Bolus’ camps include Glendon Alexander, Keita Bates-Diop, Jeff Brooks, Rex Chapman, Tim Couch, Richie Farmer, Travis Ford, Pat Graham, Darren Hancock, Allen Houston, Jack Ingram, Jimmy Jackson, Tony Kimbro, Dan Langhi, Derek Lowe, A. J. Moye, Brad Miller, Drew Neitzel, Larry O’Bannon, Jared Odle, Scott Padgett, John Pelphrey, Ty Rogers, Felton Spencer, Scott Sutton, Sean Sutton, Dejuan Wheat, Allonzo Trier, and Albert WhiteNorris Cole also attended this camp and was a first round pick in the 2011 NBA draft and a member of the NBA Champion Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013.  Five past final fours (2010-2014) have had at least one former High Potential® "Blue-Chip" camper.

All games are played full-court in Alumni Gym and the intramural complex.  Certified trainers are on duty at all times.

The Rick Bolus' High Potential® “Blue-Chip” Basketball Camp® is not affiliated with any other basketball camp using the names “High Potential;” or “Blue-Chip”.

The records were then cleared and play began Tuesday for the championship.  Louisiana claimed the championship with a 3-1 record.  Tennessee claimed the runner-up position with a 2-2 record and South Carolina finished play with a 1-3 slate.  6-3 8th Grade Jhaden Vaughn (Trigg County Cadiz KY was named Tournament Co-MVP from Team Louisiana.  6-1 Fr. There were several impressive players in this division.  5-10 8th Grade Isaac Hosman (Massac County Metropolis IL) was named Camp MVP for this division and is an outstanding scoring and passing point guard.  6-3 Fr. Mason Guffey (Grant County Dry Ridge KY) was named Camp Runner-UP MVP for this division and finishes at the rim and can stroke the outside jump shot.  6-3 8th Grade Jhaden Vaughn (Trigg County Cadiz KY) excellent talent with a big upside.  6-1 Jr. Dylan Hammonds (Grant County Dry Ridge KY) is a good player with solid skills in all areas.  6-0 Fr. Evan Biliter (Pineville Pineville KY) is an excellent rebounder who hustles and has a soft touch on his jump shot.  5-9 8th Grade Cohen Davis (Clinton County Albany KY) this scoring combo guard is one to watch in the future.  5-6 8th Grade Sam Clements (St. Peters & Paul Lexington KY) finishes well and can score from anywhere.  5-5 Fr. Coby Kramer (Highlands Ft. Thomas KY) is very athletic, passes the ball, and is a good shooter.  5-8 8th Grade John Reinhart (St. John’s Georgetown KY) is a great penetrator who finishes at the rim.  5-2 8th Grade Zachariah Smith (Walton Verona Middle Verona KY) has solid skills and a great attitude.

5-5 8th Grade Malik Corley (LaPorte Middle LaPorte IN) is a quick, fast, athletic point guard who can shoot the ball.  6-3 Fr. Theo Cseledy (Paul Laurence Dunbar Lexington KY) is a post player who runs the floor and rebounds well.  5-7 7th Grade Connor Loy (Adair County Middle Columbia KY) is a strong guard who gets results, watch in the future.  6-1 8th Grade Trefor Thomas (Trinity Christian Academy Lexington KY) is a great team player who hits the boards and plays hard.  5-11 8th Grade Bailey Thacker (Raceland Raceland KY) is a much improved player who scores well with his jump shot.  5-11 7th Grade Sawyer Thompson (Pineville Pineville KY) can play effectively both inside and out.  This is a partial list of players who impressed and there were several other players in this division poised for “break out” seasons.

High School Division

There were ten teams entered in this division.  The North Division consisted of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Delaware, and Florida.  The South Division consisted of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, and Kentucky.  Each team will play five games with the “tournament” champion and runner-up being determined by winning percentage.  If there is a tie the tiebreaker will be determined by criteria set by the camp director.

The records after the five games were as follows: North Division-Florida (4-1), Alabama (3-2), Arkansas (3-2), California (2-3), and Delaware (2-3).  South Division-Kentucky (4-1), Indiana (4-1), Illinois (2-3), Iowa (1-4), and Kansas (0-5).  Kentucky was named Tournament Champion based on less defensive points allowed and Florida was named Tournament Runner-Up based on the same criteria plus a victory over Indiana in head-to-head competition.  Tournament Co-MVP from Team Kentucky was 5-9 Sr. Jonathan Anthony (Lloyd Memorial Erlanger KY).  The Tournament Co-MVP from Team Florida was 6-3 So. KC Cabiness (Hopkinsville Hopkinsville KY).  This was a very competitive high-spirited slate of five games and even though it was not an actual tournament format each team took ever game seriously and the outcome was not decided until the last round of games when the only undefeated team Indiana was knocked off by Florida.

Conclusion

This was my 21st year attending the camp and I continue to be impressed with the involvement and work ethics of the camp director.  He has a very “hands-on” approach and observes each player’s performance at least once daily.  While talent levels may vary slightly from camp to camp, the players have ample opportunity to display their abilities, and there are always some previously undiscovered gems.

The strengths of this camp should start with the aforementioned work ethics of the camp director.  He makes everyone feel welcome and provides the official camp programs, all-star game rosters, and the list of award winners.  Another, and I believe, very important, strength of this camp is the presence of certified trainers.  Injures are evaluated and treated immediately with doctors being on call at all times.  This camp also has a tremendous up-side for players who have either not had the exposure or are late bloomers.

Ron Harrison’s reports on this and other basketball events appear on http://www.kyprephoops.com.
