Conclusion
This was a well played, well coached tournament with an Elizabethtown team peaking at the right time and riding the heroics of Antwain Barbour to the title. Barbour was touted early this season by Dave Zuberer and Rick Bolus. When these two gentlemen talk; I listen. Barbour grew 2-3 inches in height since last season and grew into stardom. Lexington Catholic didn't choke - they just ran into athletic buzz saws named Chris Williams and Antwain Barbour. Danny Haney kept extending his defense and time after time Williams and Barbour met the challenge.
Scott County's Billy Hicks has been on quite a ride. One state championship, one runner-up, and a third place, and he's not done yet. Billy will re-load and have another good team - he will accept nothing less. Good-bye Scott Hundley and Casey Alsop, thanks for the memories.
Lexington Catholic will have a good team next year. They have some young players who will develop this summer. They have an excellent coaching staff and a good system in place. They will miss their departed seniors, especially early in the season. Congratulations to seniors Matt Heissenbuttel, Will Harris, Ben Wilson, David Hewitt, and Kip Wellman. You left it all on the floor - no regrets.
Russellville could be scary next year. Dickerson, Key, and Hampton return - enough said.
Male coach Bryce Hibbard will have a big target painted on his back. He has a very young, very talented team. Everyone knows that now.
Iroquois and coach Just had a great year. Anthony Johnson had an outstanding season and was as good as Dave Zuberer stated.
I have seen Tyler Zornes play several games this year - a couple of great games, a couple of average games. You hear criticism after the average ones but he led his team to the big show three straight years - must be doing something right.
Johnson Central's Tommy McKenzie only stands 6-0 and weighs 145 pounds. However, Tommy is quick, deceptive, and very calm under pressure situations.
Patrick Sparks, Ronny Dawn, Ben Bowling, Larry O'Bannon, Tony Key, and other fine returning players are a great reason to look forward to next season. Congratulations to all the schools who made it to the big dance. There are no losers once you get that far.
