43rd District Tournament Paul Dunbar High School (Boys and Girls)

Lexington KY February 25th

Paul Dunbar (21-6)  vs.  Lexington Catholic (15-13)  (Girls) -  Lexington Catholic managed to hang on to capture a hard earned 61-58 victory over Paul Dunbar.  Dunbar led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter behind 11 points by 6-1 Jr. Ebony Rowe.  Lexington Catholic roared back to take a 32-26 halftime lead led by 5-8 8th grader Octavia Wilson who recorded 11 points in the quarter.  LexCath maintained their advantage in the third quarter and led 44-38 at the end of the quarter.  LexCath increased their lead to 50-40 in the final quarter but Dunbar fought back and pulled to within one 59-58 with eight seconds left on the clock.  Octavia Wilson hit two free throws with six seconds left in the game.  Dunbar had one last chance but missed a three point attempt at the buzzer.

This was a game of contrasting styles as Lexington Catholic relied on their pressure defense and good shooting tonight and Dunbar  pounded the ball inside with the imposing duo of Ebony Rowe and 6-2 So. Shomari Kendrick.

Lexington Catholic shot 46.3% from the field including one of six from the three point line.  The Lady Knights connected on 22 of 33 free throws, pulled down 23 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 19 Dunbar turnovers.  Dunbar shot 31.8% from the field including two of 14 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Bulldogs connected on 14 of 21 free throws, pulled down 51 rebounds, and scored 18 points off 16 Lexington Catholic turnovers.Dunbar held a 23-7 advantage in second chance points.

Octavia Wilson led Lexington Catholic with 21 points.  5-9 Sr. Maggie Wilson added 16 points.  5-9 Sr. Shaneque McGhee chipped in with 12 points including eight of 12 free throws and pulled down five rebounds.

Ebony Rowe led Dunbar with 27 points and 21 rebounds.  Shomari Kendrick added 10 points and 17 rebounds.  5-5 Sr. Erin Lucas and 5-9 Jr. Courtney Haney chipped in with eight and seven points respectively.

Tates Creek  (14-11)  vs.  Lexington Catholic (19-7)  (Boys)  -  Lexington Catholic held on down the stretch to capture a hard fought 77-69 victory over Tates Creek.   Tates Creek pulled to within three; 66-63 with 3:06 left in the game but the Commodores could not close the gap.

Lexington Catholic shot 59.6% from the field including seven of 16 from the three point line.  The Knights connected on eight of 15 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 22 points off 18 Tates Creek turnovers.  Tates Creek shot 43.3% from the field including four of 14 from beyond the arc.  The Commodores connected on seven of 10 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 19 Lexington Catholic turnovers.

6-3 Sr. Vee Sanford led the victors with 31 points and five assists.  6-3 So. taylor Martin added 14 points and six rebounds.

6-2 So. Ryan Fucci led Tates Creek with 18 points and six assists.  6-3 So. Marcellus Barksdale added 17 points and 13 rebounds.
