2009 National City/KHSAA Boys' State Tournament

Lexington KY March 18th Day 1

Hazard (26-8)  vs.  West Jessamine  (26-8)  -  Hazard led 39-28 midway through the third quarter but West Jessamine outscored the Bulldogs 23-1 the rest of the way to earn a 51-40 victory.  Hazard was zero of 14 from the field in the final quarter and only fout of 25 from the field in the second half.  Part of the problems could be attributed to foul woes as both Robert Warren and Justin Jones picked up their fourth fouls in the third quarter.

West Jessamine shot 45.9% from the field including five of 12 from the three point line.  The Colts connected on 12 of 16 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored eight points off seven Hazard turnovers.  Hazard shot 32% from the field including five of 20 from beyond the arc.  The Bulldogs connected on three of nine free throws, pulled down 20 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 16 West Jessamine turnovers.

5-11 Jr. Jarrod Polson led West Jessamine with 14 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.  6-3 Sr. Jonathan Renner added 10 points.   6-1 Jr. Kyle Mefford chipped in with nine points on three three point baskets.

6-0 Jr. Josh Whitaker led Hazard with 18 points including three three point baskets.  6-5 Sr. Justin Jones added six points.

Adair County  (26-7)  vs.  Grayson County  (25-6)  -  Grayson County took a 15-5 first quarter lead on their way to a 45-33 victory over Adair County.  Grayson County shot 35.9% from the field including three of 14 from the three point line.  The Cougars connected on 14 of 26 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 10  Adair County turnovers.  Adair County shot 33.3% from the field including two of 15 from beyond the arc.  The Indians connected on five of 11 free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored seven points off 10 Grayson County turnovers.

5-10 Jr. Travis Johnston led Grayson County with 11 points.  6-0 Sr. Wes Smith added 10 points and six rebounds.  6-3 Sr. Lance Buckler chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds.

6-7 Sr. Darren Ballou led Adair County with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  5-9 Sr. Corey Helm and 6-3 Jr. Kyle Sandusky added seven and six points respectively.

Graves County  (23-9)  vs.  Central  (16-14)  -  This was a game of runs and Central made the last move to defeat Graves County 53-51.  Central took a 30-17 lead at halftime.  Graves County roared back to lead 42-37 at the end of three quarters. Alex Morrison hit a putback with 20 seconds remaining in the game for the final score.  Graves County had a steal and a last second three point attempt that failed to connect. 

Central shot 35.6% from the field including four of 12 from the three point line.  The Yellow Jackets connected on seven of 13 free throws, pulled down 39 rebounds, and scored 22 points off 22 Graves County turnovers.  Graves County shot 41.9% from the field including four of nine from beyond the arc.  The Eagles connected on 11 of 20 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 17 Central turnovers.

6-4 Sr. Ridge Wilson led Central with 16 points and six rebounds.  5-9 Sr. Alex Morrison added 11 points.  6-4 Jr. Tim Patterson pulled down a game high 10 rebounds.

5-10 Sr. Tevin Hill led Graves County with 18 points.  6-3 Sr. Cassidy McAlpin added eight points and six rebounds.  6-5 Jr. Ryan Vogt recorded sven points and eight rebounds.

Corbin  (29-3)  vs.  Eastern  (30-2)  -  Eastern held a 27-4 advantage in second effort points in a 75-61 victory over Corbin.  Eastern shot 40% from the field including four of 11 from the three point line.  The Eagles connected on 17 of 31 free throws, pulled down 49 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 14 Corbin turnovers.  Corbin shot 40% from the field including two of 11 from beyond the arc.  The Redhounds connected on 15 of 18 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored nine points off 11 Eastern turnovers.

6-3 Sr. Chris Dowe led Eastern with 27 points including three three point baskets.  6-1 Jr. Delquan Thomas added 17 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists.  6-4 So. Lyonell Gaines added 10 points and 12 rebounds.  6-2 So. Remy Abell chipped in with 10 points.

6-5 Sr. Josh Crawford led Corbin with 33 points and nine rebounds.  6-4 Jr. Madison Johnson added nine points.
