January 31st Day 5 at the All “A” Classic features both championships and the announcement of both all tournament teams.

Newport Central Catholic (16-2)  vs.  Holy Cross (Louisville)  (20-5) (Girls) (Championship)

Newport Central Catholic coach Ron Dawn started the following lineup: 5-6 Jr. Kiley Bartels, 5-4 Jr. Hannah Thiem, 5-11 Sr. Mariah Tabor, 5-6 Jr. Brittany Fryer, and 5-6 Sr. Courtney Sandfoss.  Holy Cross coach Fred Copass countered with 5-9 Sr. Rachel Richardson, 5-8 Sr. Lindsey Roarx, 6-2 Sr. Olivia Moore, 5-7 Sr. Robin Deckard, and 5-6 So. Kim Mingus.

Newport Central Catholic raced out to a 14-4 first quarter lead in a 56-40 victory over Holy Cross.  The Thoroughbreds defense was the difference today as they scored 24 points off 23 Holy Cross turnovers.  Team balance was another key with four girls reaching double figures and the fifth (Courtney Sandfoss) flawlessly directing the offense and triggering the pressure defense.

Newport Central Catholic shot 46.7% from the field including six of 16 from the three point line.  The Thoroughbreds connected on eight of 17 free throws, pulled down 23 rebounds, and enjoyed an 18-3 advantage in three point points.  Holy Cross shot 44.7% from the field including one of four from beyond the arc.  The Cougars connected on five of nine free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 11 Newport Central Catholic turnovers.

Hannah Thiem led the victors with 14 points including four three point baskets.  Mariah Tabor added 13 points and seven rebounds.  Brittany Fryer added 12 points and six steals.  Kiley Bartels chipped in with 10 points and five steals.  Courtney Sandfoss recorded seven points, eight assists, and three steals.

Olivia Moore led Holy Cross with 10 points and nine rebounds.  Kim Mingus added nine points.

Shelby Valley  (17-3)  vs.  DeSales  (13-7)  (Boys)  Championship)

Shelby Valley coach Jason Booher started the following lineup: 6-3 Sr. Taylor Newsome, 6-4 Sr. Tyler Newsome, 6-6 Sr. Ashley Hatfield, 6-0 Sr. Cody Varney, and 5-10 Sr. Elisha Justice.  DeSales coach John Mingus countered with 6-4 Jr. Sam Keehner, 6-4 Sr. Brandon Ritchie, 6-6 Sr. Rick Roush, 5-8 Jr. Corbin Maynard, and 6-2 Sr. Derek Thornsberry.

Shelby Valley took a 35-20 lead at halftime and survived a third quarter rally by DeSales to earn a 46-37 victory.  Shelby Valley shot 45% from the field including four of 10 from the three point line.  The Wildcats connected on six of eight free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 12 DeSales turnovers.  DeSales shot 38.1% from the field including three of 17 from beyond the arc.  The Colts connected on two of four free throws, pulled down 24 rebounds, and scored nine points off 11 Shelby Valley turnovers.

Tyler Newsome led Shelby Valley with 14 points including two three point baskets.  Taylor Newsome added 12 points.  Ashley Hatfield recorded eight points including two three point baskets and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Rick Roush led DeSales with 10 points and five rebounds.  Derek Thornsberry added eight points including two three point baskets.
