Tates Creek (0-1)  vs.  Lafayette (0-2) (Girls)

Lafayette High School

Lexington, KY

December 4, 2010

Tates Creek coach Justin Cheatham started the following lineup: 5-8 So. Dominique Etling-Turner, 5-9 So. Katie Pippen, 6-1 Jr. Peyton Hisel, 5-5 So. Lexi Whaley, and 5-6 So. Oney Harrison.  Lafayette coach Allison Denton countered with 5-10 Sr. Makenzie Graham, 5-7 Jr. Emily Justice, 6-3 Sr. Shomari Kendrick, 5-7 Jr. Aleisha Stiltner, and 5-3 Sr. Jariana Gillespie.

Oney Harrison hit a free throw with 2.9 seconds remaining on the clock to give Tates Creek a 56-55 victory over Lafayette.  Lafayette led 32-19 early in the third quarter but Tates Creek chipped away at the lead and trailed 39-36 at the end of three quarters.  Tates Creek finally tied the game at 47-47 with 3:40 remaining in the game.  Tates Creek managed to take the lead but Lafayette fought back to tie the game 55-55 on two free throws by Jariana Gillespie with 26.7 seconds remaining on the clock setting the stage for Harrison’s late heroics.

This game clearly typified the phrase “the ectasy of victory and the agony of defeat.”  Tates Creek evened their record at 1-1 after a loss to Bryan Station and a potentially good Lafayette team suffered their third tough loss in a row.  This was a big win for Tates Creek and while Coach Denton will right the Lady General’s ship for now the frustration continues.

Tates Creek shot 32.7% from the field including five of 14 from the three point line.  The Lady Commodores connected on 14 of 19 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 18 Lafayette turnovers.  Lafayette shot 36.7% from the field including three of 18 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Generals connected on 16 of 21 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored 16 poin ts off 19 Tates Creek turnovers.

Oney Harrison led Tates Creek with 19 points including 11 points in the final quarter.  Peyton Hisel added 13 points and 12 rebounds.  Katie Pippen recorded 12 points and seven rebounds.

Shomari Kendrick led Lafayette with 16 points and six rebounds.  Emily Justice added 11 points and eight rebounds.
