January 5, 2012

Lafayette coach Mike Mendenhall III started the following lineup: 6-7 Jr. Charles Sweat-Washington, 6-7 Jr. Ethan Burlingham, 6-8 So. Jackson Davis, 6-0 So. Lance Blakley, and 6-3 Jr. Tranard Chester.  Lexington Catholic coach Brandon Salsman countered with 6-6 Sr. Patrick Keller, 5-10 Sr. Ross Muncy, 6-9 Jr. Jack Whitman, 5-10 Jr. Dillon Avare, and 5-10 Sr. Bryan Woomer.  (Note:  6-5 Sr. Craig Floyd was out tonight with an injury).

Lafayette defeated Lexington Catholic 63-60 tonight in overtime in a game with a lot of storylines.  Sometimes you can go home again –It seemed strange to see Mike Mendenhall III , who played at Lexington Catholic and coached there also returning as head coach of Lafayette and coaching against his father Mike Mendenhall.  Lafayette started the season 4-9 and desperately needed a signature win.  Lexington Catholic was missing one of their top scorers in Craig Floyd and an important reserve guard in Rashad Bennett but tonight belonged to Lafayette as they played together to earn a big victory.

Lafayette led 48-38 with two minutes left in regulation but LexCath scored 10 consecutive points including a three point bomb by 6-4 Fr. Tanner Johnson to force overtime.  However Lafayette regained momentum in overtime to earn the victory.

Lafayette shot 38.9% from the field including four of 15 from the three point line.  The Generals connected on 17 of 25 free throws, pulled down 42 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 22 Lexington Catholic turnovers.  Lexington Catholic shot 37% from the field including two of 21 from beyond the arc.  The Knights connected on 18 of 29 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 20 Lafayette turnovers.

Jackson Davis led Lafayette with 15 points and seven rebounds.  6-8 Jr. Nick Trisko added 14 points and 13 rebounds.  Tranard Chester recorded 14 points, seven assists, and six steals.  Charles Sweat-Washington chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Jack Whitman led Lexington Catholic with 35 points and 10 rebounds.  6-4 Fr. Tanner Johnson added eight points including two three point baskets.  6-6 Jr. Tom Banahan chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.  Bryan Woomer recorded six points and eight assists.
