Whitley County  vs.  Clay County (Girls)

Whitley County’s Brandi Smith hit the shot heard around the region as she nailed a three point shot at the buzzer to give her team a 58-55 victory over Clay County.  This broke a 61 game winning streak for Clay County over 13th region foes.  Their last loss came to South Laurel in the 2007-08 regional finals.

This game came down to a contest between the perimeter shooters of Whitley County against the powerful inside attack of Clay County.  Whitley County was nine of 32 on two point field goal attempts, 11 of 21 from the three point line, connected on seven of nine free throws, and pulled down 21 rebounds.  Clay County was 18 of 35 on two point field goal attempts, three of six from beyond the arc, connected on 10 of 13 free throws, and pulled down 27 rebounds.

5-7 Jr. Brandi Smith led Whitley County with 21 points.  5-8 Jr. Maria Johnson added 11 points and 6-0 Jr. Kandace Craig chipped in with 10 points.

5-11 Sr. Morgan Chesnut led Clay County with 17 points and six rebounds.  5-11 Sr. Cheyenne Madden added 11 points and eight rebounds.  5-10 Jr. Sara Robinson recorded 10 points and seven rebounds.

 

Whitley County (58) – Smith 21, Johnson 11, Craig 10, Jones 9, Powers 4, Dingess 3.

 

Clay County (55) – Madden 11, Chesnut 17, Mathis 6, Cotton 9, Robinson 10, B. Smith 2.
