IUPUI coach Jason Gardner started the following lineup: 6-7 So. Evan Hall, 6-8 Sr. Matt O’Leary, 6-2 Sr. Darell Combs, 5-11 Gr. Kellon Thomas, and 6-2 Jr. Ron Patterson. Eastern Kentucky University coach Dan McHale countered with 6-7 Jr. Zach Charles, 6-4 Sr. Jaylen Babb-Harrison, 6-9 So. Nick Mayo, 5-11 Fr. Asante Gist, and 6-0 Sr. Isaac McGlone.
Eastern Kentucky University opened their season with a 97-87 victory over IUPUI in a game that featured a total of 65 fouls and 83 free throws attempted. Eastern Kentucky shot 40.4% from the field including 10 of 25 from the three point line. The Colonels connected on 45 of 56 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and committed 13 turnovers. IUPUI shot 43.9% from the field including nine of 25 from beyond the arc. The Jaguars connected on 20 of 27 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and committed 14 turnovers.
Nick Mayo led Eastern Kentucky with 24 points including two three point baskets, 12 of 12 free throws, and pulled down eight rebounds. Asante Gist added 21 points including 16 of 22 free throws, seven rebounds, and five assists. Jaylen Babb-Harrison recorded 13 points including three three point baskets. Isaac McGlone also reached double figures with 11 points. 6-0 Jr. Dillon Avare added 11 points including three three point baskets.
Darell Combs led IUPUI with 28 points and four assists. Kellon Thomas and Ron Patterson each scored 11 points and 6-0 Sr. TJ Henderson chipped in with 10 points. Evan Hall pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked two shots. 6-6 Jr. Aaron Brennan added nine points, pulled down four rebounds, and blocked two shots.
