South Warren vs. Covington Catholic

This was a game that was highly anticipated with two 14-0 teams colliding for the championship. It was believed by many that Covington Catholic was the premier team in the state this year regardless of class and South Warren was undefeated and had many supporters of their claim of number one. The game did not disappoint as South Warren raced out to a 20-0 lead early in the third quarter but had to withstand a furious rally by Covington Catholic to earn a 20-16 victory. Covington Catholic had one last opportunity but the game ended with an incomplete pass to the end zone. South warren recorded 14 first downs and 291 yards of total offense. They were penalized eight times for 75 yards and lost a fumble. Covington Catholic recorded nine first downs and 261 yards of total offense. The Colonels were penalized twice for 25 yards, lost two fumbles, and had a pass intercepted.
Cam Harrison led South Warren’s ground game with 80 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. Gavin Spurrier completed 17 of 30 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns. Clayton Bush caught six passes for 35 yards. Tan. Gallahair added four receptions for 83 yards. Jantzen Dunn recorded two receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown. Caleb Lloyd added an 11 yard touchdown reception. Tre Teague led the defense with six solo and three assisted tackles with three of the tackles resulting in losses totaling 14 yards. Clayton Bush added six solo and two assisted tackles. Pete Cross recorded five solo and two assisted tackles. Rowdy Shea and Tan. Gallahair each recovered a fumble and M.J. Boley intercepted a pass.
Casey McGinness led Covington Catholic’s ground game with 95 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Caleb Jacob completed 12 of 25 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown with one interception. Michael Mayer caught five passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. Jack Coldiron added two receptions for 33 yards. Casey McGinness returned two kickoffs for 43 yards with a long return of 25 yards. Luke Summe recorded two kickoffs for 55 yards with a long return of 35 yards. Jackson Blank led the defense with six solo and four assisted tackles. Michael Mayer added seven solo and one assisted tackles. Daniel Felix recorded five solo and three assisted tackles. Luke Summe recovered a fumble.
