2019 KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16® State Basketball Tournament

Scott County (33-1) vs. Knott County Central (25-7) Game 1

March 13, 2019

 

Scott County coach Steve Helton started the following lineup: 6-0 So. Kenady Tompkins, 5-10 Sr. Maaliya Owens, 6-2 Jr. Malea Williams, 5-5 Sr. Juliette Smith, and 5-5 Jr. Morgan DeFoor.  Knott County Central coach Jeff Honeycutt countered with 5-10 Sr. Madison Ashley, 5-8 So. Keara Mullins, 5-10 Sr. Emily Williams, 5-0 Jr. Natalie Slone, and 5-9 Sr. Jada Higgins.

 

Scott County defeated Knott County Central by a score of 87-61.  The score was tied three times and there were three lead changes in the game.  Scott County shot 42% from the field including 12 of 28 from the three point line.  The Lady Cardinals connected on 17 of 22 free throws, pulled down 49 rebounds, and scored 23 points off 15 Knott County Central turnovers.  Knott County Central shot 28.8% from the field including two of 12 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Patriots connected on 21 of 28 free throws, pulled down 43 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 12 Scott County turnovers.

 

Maaliya Owens led Scott County with 30 points including six three point baskets, seven rebounds, and three assists.  Morgan DeFoor added 21 points including four three point baskets, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Juliette Smith recorded 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.  Kenady Tompkins chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.  Malea Williams added four points, 11 rebounds, and five blocked shots in only 16 minutes of play.  5-4 So. sharp shooter Hailey Ward nailed two long three point baskets in only four minutes of play.

 

Jada Higgins led Knott County Central with 20 points including eight of 12 free throws, eight rebounds, and five assists.  Keara Mullins added 13 points including four of five free throws and six rebounds.  Emily Williams recorded 11 points and six rebounds.  Madison Ashley pulled down eight rebounds.
