Paintsville Tailback John Walker Phelps battled illness and a wet field to roll up 206 yards and two touchdowns to lead Paintsville to a 36-34 victory over Williamsburg. The win did not come easy as Williamsburg mounted a late drive and marched to the Paintsville seven yard line where they had first-and-goal. They managed to get to the three yard line but two incomplete passes gave the ball back to Paintsville Tigers with 5:21 remaining in the game. The Tigers were able to run out the clock with their ground-and-pound offense led by QB Jake Hyden and Phelps. Paintsville recorded 19 first downs and 336 yards of total offense; 324 yards coming on the ground. The Tigers were penalized 12 times for 119 yards and had a pass intercepted. Williamsburg recorded 16 first downs and 277 yards of total offense. The Yellow Jackets were penalized 14 times for 118 yards, lost two fumbles, and had a pass intercepted.
John Phelps led Paintsville’s ground game with 206 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. Jake Hyden carried the ball 19 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Jake Hyden completed one of seven passes for 12 yards with one interception. Karsten Poe caught one pass for 12 yards. Nick Keeton recovered two fumbles including one in the end zone for a touchdown.
Dalton Ponder led Williamsburg’s ground game with 33 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Anthony Snell carried the ball five times for 19 yards. Dalton Ponder completed 17 of 34 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Caleb Rose caught seven passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Gavon Thomas added four receptions for 50 yards and one touchdown. Dakota Lipsteuer caught three passes for 42 yards. Devonte Powell chipped in with two receptions for 23 yards. Gavon Thomas also electrified the Yellow Jacket fans with a dazzling 80 yard broken field run on a kickoff return for a touchdown.
