Berea coach Dammian Stepp started the following lineup: 6-0 So.Madison Howell, 5-9 Fr. Chesney Lovins, 6-0 So. Mackenzie Howell, 5-0 So. Isis Rodgers, and 5-8 So. Alexis Newman. Madison Central coach Brad Lovely countered with 5-10 Jr. Gretchen Hammitt, 5-9 Sr. Taleya Todd, 5-11 Sr. Jekauri McKeithen, 5-4 Fr. Eve Carter, and 5-5 Jr. Brianna Bierbaum.
Madison Central trailed 20-16 at halftime but rallied in the second half to pull away for a 43-32 victory over Berea and earn the district crown. They benefitted from excellent free throws shooting today connecting on 21 of 29 from the charity stripe for a 72.4% mark . This was an area that had cost them in several games this season. Madison Central shot 27.8% from the field including two of seven from the three point line. The Indians pulled down 31 rebounds and committed five turnovers. Berea shot 28.6% from the field including two of 10 from beyond the arc. The Lady Pirates connected on 14 of 16 free throws, pulled down 19 rebounds, and committed nine turnovers.
Tournament MVP Taleya Todd led Madison Central with 21 points including 15 of 19 free throws and three blocked shots. The “double-double” machine Jekauri McKeithen added 10 points, 19 rebounds, and two assists. 5-4 7th Grade Nataya Strader had a good game off the bench with five points and two rebounds.
Madison Howell led Berea with 10 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Isis Rodgers added nine points including four of four free throws. Chesney Lovins recorded five points, three rebounds, and two steals.
