Covington Catholic  vs.  Scott County (Championship)

 

Covington Catholic coach Scott Ruthsatz started the following lineup: 6-5 So. Ben Heppler, 6-3 Sr. Mark Schult, 6-6 Jr. Bo Schuh, 5-10 Sr. Nick Ruthsatz, and 6-1 Fr. Cole VonHandorf.   Scott County coach Billy Hicks countered with 6-3 Sr. Tony Martini, 6-0 Sr. Matt Murray, 7-1 So. Raekwon Long, 6-1 Sr. Teddy Ware, and 6-1 Sr. Trent Gilbert. 

 

Covington Catholic captured the championship with a 59-51 overtime victory over Scott County.  CovCath jumped out to a 9-3 lead but Scott County went on an 18-0 run to take a 21-9 lead midway through the second quarter and led 27-15 to go with 1:10 to go in the first half.  Scott County still led 36-28 at the end of three quarters but CovCath outscored the Cardinals 19-11 in the final quarter to force overtime.  CovCath’s Nick Ruthsatz hit two free throws to tie the score at 47-47 with 51 seconds left in regulation.   Scott County called three timeouts in the final 45 seconds but missed the potential winning shot in the closing seconds.  CovCath rebounded and got a time out with less than two seconds left on the clock.  Bo Schuh got off a half court shot at the buzzer that bounced off the front of the rim and forced overtime.  Scott County took a 51-49 lead in overtime but Covington Catholic closed out the game on a 10-0 run.  There were two ties and five lead changes in the game.

 

Covington Catholic shot 39.5% from the field including six of 17 from the three point line.  The Colonels connected on 19 of 27 free throws, pulled down 36 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 13 Scott County turnovers.  Scott County shot 30.2% from the field including five of 26 from beyond the arc.  The Cardinals connected on eight of 15 free throws, pulled down 45 rebounds, and scored eight points off 11 Covington Catholic turnovers.  Scott County attempted 20 more shots (63-43) from the field than Covington Catholic and held a 20-2 advantage in bench scoring.

 

Nick Ruthsatz led Covington Catholic with 25 points including three three point baskets, 10 of 13 free throws, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.  Mark Schult added 12 points and six rebounds.  Bo Schuh pulled down 12 rebounds.

 

6-2 Jr. Hines Jones led Scott County with 18 points including three three point baskets and 10 rebounds.  Tony Martini added 16 points and 17 rebounds.  Trent Gilbert chipped in with 10 points but was only four of 25 from the field as his shot was not falling today.  However Gilbert put together some phenomenal performances in this event.
