2001 KHSAA Sweet Sixteen® Boys State Tournament

Rupp Arena

Lexington, KY

March 17, 2001

Lafayette (24-11) vs. Louisville Male (32-3) (Championship)

Lafayette coach Don Adkins started the following lineup: 6-3 Sr. Robert Madison, 6-0 Sr. Jeff Ford, 6-7 Sr. Vernard Hazard, 5-9 Sr. James Gentry, and 6-0 Sr. Quinton Roberts.  Male coach Bryce Hibbard countered with 6-5 Sr. Larry O’Bannon, 6-3 So. Mike Bush, 6-6 Jr. LaVar Carter, 5-10 Jr. Adam Burks, and 5-11 Jr. Johnny Mathies.

Lafayette overcame a 29-14 deficit at the half and a 39-31 deficit after three quarters to defeat Male 54-49 for the title.  Comebacks are not new for Lafayette as they were 13-11 at one point this season and finished the season with 12 consecutive victories.  This was the sixth championship for Lafayette and a wonderful birthday present for Coach Adkins.  Male totally dominated the first half but Lafayette, led by the ultimate free spirit Robert Madison came back before a crowd of 19,288 to defeat the tourney favorite Male squad.  Lafayette’s trapping defense gave Male problems in the second half and once Male lost momentum they could never regain the edge.

Lafayette was led tonight by tournament MVP Robert Madison with 23 points and eight rebounds.  Male was led by Larry O’Bannon with 13 points and seven rebounds.  LaVar Carter added 10 points and nine rebounds.
