2020 ESPN GEICO High School Football Kickoff

 

Friday August 28th

 

St. Paul’s Episcopal (Alabama) vs. Spanish Fort (Alabama)

 

Javonte Graves-Billups (Army commit) scored on two short TD runs and Myles Grayson kicked a 35 yard field goal to give St. Paul’s Episcopal a 17-14 victory over Spanish Fort.  Spanish Fort was plagued by mistakes as they were penalized 14 times for 130 yards.  Spanish Fort QB Brendon Byrd completed nine of 13 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns both to Mario Montgomery.  Montgomery’s second touchdown reception pulled the Toros to within three; 17-14 but St. Paul’s Episcopal recovered the ensuing onside kick with approximately two minutes left in the game.  QB Bestor McFadden settled the issue with a 14 yard run on third down to give the Saints a first down and allow them to run out the clock.

 

Corner Canyon (Utah) vs. Bingham (Utah)

 

Corner Canyon comes in on a roll capturing the Utah 5A title in 2018 and the 6A title in 2019.  Center Jackson Light (Oregon commit), Athlete Austin Bell and QB Jaxson Dart who transferred from Roy High School lead the Chargers.  The Bingham Miners have won seven Utah championships and legendary coach Dave Peck returns after a five year hiatus.  They are led by an excellent line featuring Jr. George Maile, Sr. DE Viliami Pouha (Utah commit), and Sr. DE Tupou Maile (Utah State commit).  Sr. OG LJ Tufele and Jr WR Isiah Glasker (BYU commit lead the offense.

 

Bingham utilized an excellent game plan and some luck in converting two fake punts to first downs and actually taking a 10-7 lead before Corner Canyon rallied to lead 21-13 at halftime.  Coach Eric Kjar’s Corner Canyon Chargers exploded in the second half to score 21 points and earn a 42-20 victory.  Jaxson Dart exploded on the national scene by throwing for 277 yards and six touchdowns and adding 110 yards on 12 carries.  Talmadge Handley and Noah Kjar each caught two touchdown passes and Cody Hagen and Jeff Meine each added one scoring reception.  QB Troy Mehn completed 11 of 20 passes for 105 yards and one touchdown for Bingham and Saia Lomu carried the ball carried the ball 23 times for 126 yards and a touchdown and Isiah Glasker caught six passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.

 

Saturday August 29th

 

Trinity Christian (TX) vs. Knoxville Catholic (TN)

 

Trinity Christian has won three consecutive Division II Texas state championships and are led by QB Shedeur Sanders son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders who is the Offensive Coordinator at Trinity Christian.  Sanders is 6-2 and 200 pounds and threw for 3477 yards with 47 touchdowns and four interceptions. Knoxville Catholic is led by Jr. QB Kaden Martin son of former Tennessee star QB Tee Martin who is now the assistant head coach at Tennessee.

 

Trinity Christian led 21-14 at halftime but outscored Knoxville Catholic 28-0 in the second half to earn a 49-14 victory.  It was all Shedeur Sanders tonight as he completed 24 of 30 passes for 388 yards and ran for two more scores.  Jordyn Williams caught nine passes for 177 yards and a touchdown.  Kaden Martin passed for 110 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score.

 

Bentonville West (Arkansas) vs. Broken Arrow (OK)

 

Bentonville West is led by Sr. WR Stephen Dyson while Broken Arrow is led by athlete Maurion Horn who excels in the defensive secondary as well as running back.  This game turned into an offensive shootout as Broken Arrow won by the score of 50-23 over Bentonville West Broken Arrow rolled up 456 yards of total offense while Bentonville West recorded 449 yards of total offense.

 

Maurion Horn carried the ball 13 times for 190 yards and two touchdowns to lead the victors.  QB Jake Raines completed seven of 15 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns.  Keyon Barnett and Jaiell Talley each caught touchdown passes.  Dalton McDonald led Bentonville West by completing 25 of 39 passes for 271 yards and carried the ball 11 times for 97 yards and a touchdown.  Carlos Hall carried the ball 12 times for 52 yards and two touchdowns and Stephen Dyson caught 16 passes for 175 yards.

 

St. Xavier (OH) vs. Brownsburg (IN)

 

St. Xavier will be led by Sr. Athlete Liam Clifford (Penn State commit), Sr. DT Gio Albanese, Jr. OT Brian Parker, and Jr. OG Cameron Collins.  Brownsburg is led by a strong Sr. class including QB Ben Easters (Kansas commit), WR Preston Terrell (Purdue), OT Joshua Sales (Indians commit), and Center Pete Nygra (Northern Illinois commit).

 

Brownsburg rallied from a 17-10 third quarter deficit to defeat St. Xavier 30-24 in overtime.  Brownsburg won the toss in overtime and elected to play defense.  Jalen Wilson intercepted a pass to give Brownsburg the ball and they won the game on a one yard run by Brandon Burks.  Ben Easters led Brownsburg completing 14 of 30 passes for 208 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.  Luke Lacey caught nine passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns.  Caleb Marcus carried the ball 14 times for 83 yards and a touchdown and Brandon Burks added 77 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

 

Brogan McGaughey led St. Xavier by completing 26 of 38 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.  Liam Clifford caught nine passes for 125 yards.  Jalen Patterson added seven receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown.  Charles Kellom added five receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown.  Matthew Devine led the defense with 13 tackles while Eli Kirk added 12 tackles and intercepted a pass.

 

Century (ND) vs. Legacy (ND)

 

Century has captured three of the last 3A North Dakota state championships and finished 14-0 last season. A player to watch is Andrew Leingang (Kansas State commit)

 

Century won the game by a score of 37-29 but Legacy gave them quite a battle.  Century blocked two punts tonight but the big play offense of Legacy led by QB Clay Feland who accounted for 386 yards and four touchdowns made them work for the victory.  5-11 195 Sr. RB Cade Garcia led the Century attack with 150 yards and touchdown runs of 4 and 41 yards on 27 carries. 

 

Legacy trailed 20-0 after the first quarter but QB Clay Feland put the Sabers on his back and made a game of it.  Feland completed 15 of 27 passes for 274 yards and touchdown passes of 36 and 45 yards.  Feland also carried the ball 23 times for 113 yards and scored two touchdowns on 2 yard runs.  Nick Kupfer caught six passes for 144 yards including a touchdown reception of 45 yards.

 

Sunday August 30th

 

Pickerington North (OH) vs. Pickerington Central (OH)

 

Pickerington North suffered a huge loss before the season started as 6-5 230 DE Jack Sawyer (Ohio State commit) decided to forego  his senior season to prepare for college.  Sr. DE Elijah Hawk (Bowling Green commit) is expected to lead the defense.  Pickerington Central won the Division I championship in 2019 and will be led by Sr. athlete Garner Wallace (northwestern commit) and RB Nick Mosely (Bowling Green commit).

 

Pickerington Central won this game by the score of 35-9.  QB Garner Wallace carried the ball 14 times for 98 yards and scored on a 30 yard run.  Nick Mosley carried the ball 20 times for 88 yards and scored on runs of 3, 2, and 5 yards.
