KABC Titans Rockets Summer High School Shootout

June 17-19, 2022


Collins coach Chris Gaither has put together another classic for June 17-19. There will be 96 teams playing in two tournaments, one a 64 team tournament and a 32 team event. They will be playing at six locations including Collins High School main, Collins High School auxiliary, West Middle School, Marnel Moorman School, Shelby Christian Church, and First Baptist Church.


It will feature 81 teams from Kentucky, eight from Ohio, five from Florida, and two from Indiana. The Kentucky teams will feature George Rogers Clark defending state champion and runner-up Warren Central. Ten of last years regional champions will be in the field including Murray, Lyon County, Jeffersontown, Male, North Oldham, Henry Clay, Lincoln County, North Laurel, Warren Central, and George Rogers Clark. Indianapolis Cathedral won the state’s Class 4A title last season.


There are also plenty of individual stars slated to play in this event inclding Reed Sheppard (North Laurel), Gabe Sisk (Ballard), Cyr Malonga (Evangel Christian), Jerone Morton (GRC), Trent Edwards (GRC), Jacob Meyer (Covington Holy Cross), Grant Whitaker (Murray), Teagan Moore (Owen County), and Travis Perry (Lyon County). Some of the out-of-state stars include 6-11 Xavier Booker (Indianapolis Cathedral), Chico Johnson (Toledo Central Catholic), Lawrent Rice (Huber Heights OH Wayne), and Joey Hart (Linton-Stockton IN).


This event made its debut in 2019 and provides a great opportunity for college coaches to atend and observe players from Kentucky and surrounding states. Many Division I coaches are expected to attend this elite event this weekend.

Drae Vasser hit a free throw in the sudden death second overtime to give Trinity the championship. Drae Vasser led Trinity with 17 points. Cam McClain added 16 points and CJ Walls chipped in with 11 points. Vince Dawson and DeJohn Blunt led Great Crossing with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Trinity went 6-0 to capture the 64 Team Tourney Championship. They defeated Calloway County, Lincoln County, Bowling Green, WA Lions, George Rogers Clark, and Great Crossing. Great Crossing finished 5-1 and defeated South Oldham, Eastern, North Oldham. Warren Central, and Woodford County on their way to the championship game.


Cathedral (IN) captured the 32 Team Tournament with a 75-71 victory over Frederick Douglass. Cathedral finished 5-0 with victories over Ohio County, Lake Minneola, Fairfield, Lyon County, ad Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass finished 4-1 with victories over Louisville Collegiate, Letcher County Central, Henry Clay, and Lakota East before the championship game.


This event met and in some cases exceeded all expectations with excellent teams and many marquee players. A special thanks to the event organizers for their up-to-date results. Many reporters and recruiting gurus covered this event extensively that has rapidly turned into an elite showcase and provides an excellent viewing and scouting platform for the college coaches.
