Highlands vs. Ryle

Ryle High School
Union, KY
September 13, 2024

© 2024 by Ron Harrison

Ryle defeated Highland 34-28 in overtime to hand the Bluebirds their first defeat of the season. It was also a big night for Ryle coach Mike Engler as he became the all team leader in wins at Ryle in football. It was only fitting that this game would go to overtime in this battle between Northern Kentucky powerhouse programs. Ryle won the toss in overtime and chose to play defense. It was short but sweet for Ryle as on Highland’s first play Rio Litmer’s pass was picked off by Dylan Lee. The Ryle offense took the field and on their first play Jacob Savage ran the ball into the end zone to give the Raiders the victory. Ryle recorded 303 yards of total offense, was penalized seven times for 40 yards, lost a fumble, and had one pass intercepted. Highlands recorded 364 yards of total offense, was penalized four times for 45 yards, lost three fumbles, and had two passes intercepted.

Jacob Savage led Ryle’s ground game with 102 yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries. Jaden Galicia carried the ball seven times for 27 yards. Nathan Verax recorded 23 yards on six carries. Nathan Verax completed 16 of 23 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown with one interception. Landon Lorms caught four passes for 56 yards and one touchdown. Dylan Lee added four receptions for 21 yards. Max Karwath recorded three receptions for 29 yards. Gavin Lyons chipped in with three catches for 26 yards. Dylan Lee recorded one interception.

Jack White led Highlands’ ground game with 156 yards on 22 carries. Gabe Williams carried the ball six times for 30 yards and a touchdown. Deven James carried the ball twice for six yards and a touchdown. Rio Litmer completed 14 of 22 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Jackson Arnold caught seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. Adam Surrey added five receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown. Peyton Klosterman intercepted a pass he returned for 14 yards and also recovered a fumble.
