September 1, 2013

© 2013 by Ron Harrison

This game was scheduled for last night but had to be postponed due to inclement weather.  The highly touted Class 6A power St. Xavier came to town with a lofty reputation and left with a 49-28 victory over a Lexington Catholic team that fought to the very end. Lexington Catholic trailed 35-28 late in the third quarter but St. Xavier recorded 14 unanswered points to settle the issue.  St. Xavier recorded 23 first downs and 485 yards of total offense.  Their powerful ground game recorded 264 yards on 36 carries for a robust 7.3 yards per carry.  This was nicely supplemented with 221 yard through the air and special team play that added an 86 yard kickoff return for a score.  The Tigers were penalized six times for 54 yards and had one pass intercepted. Their aggressive defense recorded four quarterback sacks for losses totaling 32 yards.  Lexington Catholic recorded 18 first downs and 385 yards of total offense.  The Knights were penalized six times for 49 yards, lost a fumble and had two passes intercepted.

Charles Walker led the St. Xavier ground game with 92 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.  5-10 223 pound Jr. battering ram RB Austin Davis added 79 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries and was named Game MVP for St. Xavier.  Cedrick Miller added 66 yards on five carries.  BJ Nagle completed 13 of 28 passes for 221 yards and one touchdown with one interception.  Luke Hayden caught four passes for 69 yards.  Charles Walker also caught four passes  for 41 yards.  W. Roshkowski added three receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown.  Roshkowski also scored on an 86 yard kickoff return.  Evan Cafee led the defense with five solo tackles with three of his tackles resulting in losses totaling 14 yards.  A. McCormick added four solo tackles and recorded a quarterback sack for a loss of 13 yards.

Marcelis Logan led Lexington Catholic’s ground game with 54 yards on two carries but spent a lot of time on the sidelines fighting leg cramps.  Noah Mitchell added 33 yards on 10 carries.  Reese Ryan completed 19 of 35 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions.  David Bouvier caught nine passes for 89 yards and scored on a 98 yard kickoff return.  Sam Letton added five receptions for 192 yards and three touchdowns and was named Game MVP for Lexington Catholic.  Cody Mitchell led the defense with six solo and three assisted tackles and intercepted a pass.  Chase Boling added four solo and three assisted tackles and Braxton Couch recorded three solo and five assisted tackles.  5-9 187 pound Sr. RB Noah Mitchell continues to impress with his toughness and wide range of skills.  Mitchell is “tough-as-nails” and is an excellent lead blocker and an excellent pass protection blocker for his quarterback.  He also has the ability to gain the tough yards on the ground and has a quick acceleration through the hole.  Mitchell also has the ability to catch the safety valve pass and is an excellent student.
