Southwestern vs. Lexington Catholic

Lexington Catholic High School
Lexington, KY
October 28, 2016

© 2016 by Ron Harrison

Lexington Catholic defeated Southwestern 23-22 at the horn on a 23 yard field goal by Conner Fry in a game that had more plot turns and twists than a murder mystery.  Late in the third quarter Southwestern led 16-14 and appeared to be driving for a touchdown that would have given the Warriors some breathing room.  Southwestern had a fourth-and one-from the Lexington Catholic one yard line but fumbled away the ball.  Lexington Catholic took the lead in the final quarter on a 14 yard pass from Beau Allen to Ben Buchignani to make the score 20-16 but missed an attempt at a two point conversion.  Southwestern rallied to take a 22-20 lead on a Trevor Brock three yard run with 41 seconds left on the clock but missed the conversion kick.  Southwestern kicked off and it was a short kick that gave Lexington Catholic the ball around midfield.  The Knight utilized the clock efficiently completing three passes to get the ball within field goal range for the victory.  The intent of Southwestern was to kick the ball low to diminish the chance of a long return but unfortunately for the Warriors the ball did not travel the desired distance and allowed the Knights the opportunity to play on a short field.  Despite the tough loss Southwestern played well tonight despite the fact that they were missing their top running back Patric Edwards who was nursing an injury.

Lexington Catholic recorded 17 first downs and 317 yards of total offense.  The Knights were penalized six times for 55 yards and lost a fumble.  Southwestern recorded 22 first downs and 422 yards of total offense.  The Warriors were penalized eight times for 61 yards and lost a fumble.

Dameon Jones led Lexington Catholic’s ground game with 68 yards on 15 carries.  Beau Allen completed 14 of 20 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns.  Kirk Fagot completed three of four passes for 14 yards and a touchdown.  Ben Buchignani caught five passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.  Bo Bennington added three receptions for 40 yards.  Sam Hodges added three receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown.  Austin Pedroche caught a two yard touchdown pass.  Austin Pedroche led the defense with 12 solo and six assisted tackles.  Carson Brownell added nine solo and one assisted tackles.  Sid Sharp recorded eight solo and one assisted tackles.

William Lemmon led Southwestern’s ground game with 172 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries.  Drew Sawyers carried the ball six times for 62 yards.  Floyd Fannin carried the ball nine times for 39 yards.  Brandon Pruitt completed seven of 10 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown.  JP Vaught caught eight passes for 139 yards and a touchdown.  JP Vaught returned three kickoffs for 67 yards with a long return of 40 yards.  Devin Strunk led the defense with five solo and two assisted tackles and recovered a fumble.  Treavor Brock added five solo and one assisted tackles.  Drew Sawyers recorded four solo and one assisted tackles.
