Beechwood vs. Mayfield

Class 2A 2023 UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals (Semifinals)

Mayfield High School
Mayfield, KY
November 24, 2023

© 2023 by Ron Harrison

This was a game straight out of “Friday Night Lights” with the home team Mayfield pulling out a last second victory on an 18 yard field goal by Lincoln Suiter to defeat the Beechwood Tigers who had won three consecutive 2A titles by the score of 31-28. It was also sweet redemption for Suiter who missed an extra point attempt against Beechwood last year that would have tied the game in the 2A finals. Mayfield had a two touchdown lead but the Tigers clawed back to tie the game at 28-28 with alittle over two minutes remaining in the game. Momentum had seemingly flipped to Beechwood but Mayfield’s Carter Morris intercpted a pass by Clay Hayden to set the stage for Mayfield’s winning drive. The home crowd was irate for much of the evening as Mayfield had touchdowns taken off the board by penalties but in the end it was a night for celebrating.

Mayfield recorded 17 first downs and 390 yards of total offense. They were penalized seven times for 55 yards and lost a fumble. Beechwood recorded 19 first downs and 501 yards of total offense. The Tigers were penalized five times for 40 yards and had two passes intercepted.

JuJu Starks led the Mayfield ground game with 220 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries. Zane Cartwright completed 11 of 17 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown. Xaqvier Biggers caught five passes for 59 yards. Mak Hoover added three receptions for 46 yards and one touchdown. Braden and Will Morris each caught one pass for 33 and 27 yards respectively. Ian Williams led the defense with seven solo and three assisted tackles. Carter Morris added four solo and four assisted tackles and intercpted a pass he returned 11 yards. Xavier Biggers recorded four solo and two assisted tackles. Landon Kemp chipped in with two solo and four assisted tackles and intercepted a pass. Malik Kirby and Diego Torres recorded five and four solo tackles respectively.

Chase Flaherty led Beechwood’s ground game with 66 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Tyler Fryman carried the ball four times for 27 yards and a touchdown. Clay Hayden completed 25 of 43 passes for 420 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Luke Erdman caught seven passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Fryman added six receptions for 136 yards. James Cusik recorded seven receptions for 79 yards. Chase Flaherty added three receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown. Talon Linder chipped in with two rece1ptions for 32 yards. James Cusick recovered a fumble.

Carson Taylor kicked a 35 yard field goal with 4:10 left on the clock to give Cooper a 17-15 come-from-behind victory over Highlands. Cooper raced out to a 14-0 lead but Highlands clawed back in the game to take a 15-14 lead on a play that started out as a run by Adam Surrey who pulled up and passed to Jackson Arnold for a 15 yard scoring reception. The Bluebirds opted to go for two but a fumbled snap doomed the play to failure. This would ultimately prove costly as Cooper hit the winning field goal. However Highland still had their opportunities as the Bluebirds were driving but fumbled the ball and Cooper’s Ryker Campbell recovered on the Cooper seven yard line with 1:17 left on the clock. Cooper could not move the ball and a short punt allowed Highlands to take the ball on the Cooper 24. However on third down Mason Stanton intercepted a Highland’s pass to stop the drive with 11 seconds remaining and ensure Cooper the victory.

Cooper recorded 221 yards of total offense and had one turnover and was penalized six times for 42 yards. Highlands recorded 263 yards of total offense, suffered two turnovers and was penalized four times for 40 yards.
