Chapter 9

Pacing back and forth, A.J fiddled with his hands as he waited for a doctor to tell him if Theresa was ok. Just then, Stephanie and Kevin came bursting into the room scared looks on both of their faces.

“What happened to her A.J?” Stephanie yelled running of to A.J and staring him in his eyes that showed pain and sadness. “You did this didn’t you!” Stephanie cried her fist clenched tightly.

“I…I…don’t know…I woke up this morning and found her in the bathroom.” A.J stuttered as he watched as Stephanie fell against Kevin sobbing loudly. “I don’t want her to die…”

“Why! Oh God…please let her be ok.” She prayed as Kevin kissed Stephanie’s temples in an act of trying to calm her down.

“Shh…baby.” Kevin soothed pulling her into his arms and hugging her tightly against his strong chest.

“Mr. McLean?” A voice asked just as the sound of a door being shut was heard.

“Yes?” A.J whispered turning around to see a tall lean man with gray hair, holding a clip board stare at him.

“Follow me please.” He smiled sadly as A.J followed him.

“What is it doctor?” A.J wondered impatiently.

“Well…Theresa is in a comma due to some serious head trauma and she has two cracked ribs and a sore uterus…” The doctor trailed off examining his notes. “And do you know if Ms. Bischoff was trying to conceive or was pregnant?”

“Umm…n-no.” A.J stuttered still trying to process all of the given information.

“Well…we’ve discovered that she a couple of days pregnant, but she had a miscarriage due to the serious trauma she has faced whenever all of this happened. Now Mr. McLean, do you honestly know what exactly happened last night?”

“No I don’t sir.” A.J cried. He was a father. “Is she going to be ok?”

“At this point, we don’t quite know yet. Along with the serious head trauma, there was some internal bleeding that we're working on stopping at the moment. But it is to early to state whether she will survive.” The doctor spoke truthfully. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I will go attend to Ms. Bischoff.”

“Ok.” A.J whispered, the tears returning to his eyes. How could this happen to him?

“You bastard!” Stephanie yelled lunging at him. “How could you do this to her?”

“Steph…” A.J trailed off grabbing a hold of her fists that were painfully hitting him in the chest. “I’m so sorry.” He sobbed as Stephanie fell against him and sobbed too. “I’m sorry…I promised her. I promised her…” He continued bawl as the two collapsed to the floor holding each other.

-A week later-

Staring at the white coffin that sat on the coffin lower, Stephanie ran a tissue under her eyes wiping away all of the sadden tears. Her best friend was gone.

“May God be with her, and let God watch over her as she becomes one of his many angels.” The priest read as many friends and family mourned over the death of their loved one.

Glancing across the cemetery, Stephanie could see A.J standing there dressed entirely in black and holding an umbrella as the rain poured down upon the earth. She heard Kevin shift his weight and looked up at him. “Look…theirs A.J.” She whispered as Kevin put the umbrella over her more.

“At least he came to see her be buried.” Kevin sighed gently wrapping a loving arm around her waist. “Just remember baby, Theresa would have been happy that he at least showed up at the same cemetery.”

“Yeah.” She slowly nodded while she turned her attention to the lowering casket. “I love you Trease.”

“Come on honey, they’re all leaving.” Kevin said pulling her away slowly.

“Ok hold on.” Stephanie stated. “You go on, I’ll meet you at the car.” Kevin just nodded as he left her to be by herself. Stepping closer to the uncovered grave, Stephanie fell to her knees after tossing a white rose into the six-foot hole. “Oh God, why did you have to take my friend.” She cried the tears mixing in with the falling ran. “Come back Trease, come back.”

-A month after Theresa’s death-

“Hello group, we have a new member to Pine Oaks he is going to be here with us for 30 days. Would you like to introduce yourself and explain why you’re here.” The mid-aged women said politely as she crossed her legs and placing her hands upon the clipboard that rested in her lap.

“I’m…I’m Alex…” He trailed off looking down at his rugged hands. “And I’m an alcoholic.”

“Hi Alex.” Everyone repeated.
