Chapter 49: Breaking up's hard to do

“Kevin what do you need to talk to me about?” Stephanie asked from the passenger seat of his navy truck.

“Steph…baby you know I love you, right?” Kevin said looking down at his hands that rested on the bottom part of the stirring wheel.

“Yeah.” Stephanie said slowly nodding while looking at him.

“And baby I know your gonna make it bigger than Brittany.” Kevin sighed. “I think we should take a break.” He spat out looking up to see her brown eyes darken in surprise and hurt.

“You’re joking right?” She pushed out a fake laugh. “This is a joke right, Kevin?” Stephanie said her bottom lip starting to tremble when he didn’t answer. “Answer me Kevin.” She yelled her voice full of sadness.

“No! It isn’t.” Kevin yelled back then bit his lip when he saw the tears fall freely from her eyes.

“Fine.” She sniffed climbing out of the truck. “It’s over, I understand.” With that she slammed the door and took off running towards her apartment. Kevin sat in the driver’s seat watching her. And as soon as she shut the door of the apartment, his head hit the stirring wheel and he bawled like a new born baby.

“Why!?” He cried as he hit it roughly with his fist. “I love you so much.” He mumbled as if Stephanie was still sitting next to him. Raising his head back up, Kevin wiped his eyes off with the back of his hand and started the car and speeding away from the cluster of apartments and his lost love.

-A week later-

Waking in the cold hospital room, Theresa yawned as the anesthetic from her surgery wore off.

“Hey Theresa.” Stephanie whispered when she noticed her friend come to.

“Hi.” She mumbled rubbing her eyes slowly with her left hand so she wouldn’t disturb the IV on her right.

“How do you feel?” Stephanie asked.

“Sore.” Theresa laughed groggily then turned her head to notice A.J come in.

“Hey Precious.” A.J smiled at his girlfriend as he leaned down and kissed her make-up less forehead.

“Hey. So when do I get out of here?” Theresa questioned.

“Tonight.” Stephanie answered. “The doctor said that he got rid of all of the scars and that your good to go.”

“Good.” Theresa smiled in delight, but then winced at the burning pain in her stomach. “When they send me home, I at least hope it’s with some pain killers.”

“Yeah, don’t worry about that.” A.J chuckled sitting on the bed next to his girlfriend.

“Where’s Lisa?” Theresa asked.

“Her and Kyle went to go get Justin. He found out about your surgery and wanted to come and visit you.” Stephanie replied noticing a smile form on Theresa’s lips.

“Justin, God I haven’t seen him forever.” Theresa sighed, and as if on cue the three entered the room. “Justin!”

“Hello there Beautiful.” Justin smiled widely walking towards her. “How are you?” He wondered kissing her cheek.

“Fine, a little tired and sore. You?”

“Working on a new album.” Justin answered. “Hey Stephanie, hi A.J.”

“Hey Justin.” Stephanie waved towards her friends ex.

“Sup.” A.J just nodded as his phone began to ring. “I’ll be back.” With that he left the room and quietly shut the door behind him.

“How's the new album going?” Theresa asked slowly lifting herself up and leaning against the pillows.

“It’s coming along very well. Were all pleased with the out come so far. How about you guys?” Justin grinned.

“We just finished our last track last week and Monday we chose the picture for the single cover and CD cover. Our single was released yesterday, and when Theresa gets out and a little better we have to go on a promotional tour around New York.” Stephanie informed.

“And we get to make our first video next week.” Lisa filled in.

“Wow, you girls are gonna be busy, huh?” Justin nodded. “What’s the name of y’alls first single?”

“Don’t say things that you don’t mean.” Theresa retorted.

“Cool, I’ll have to listen for it.” Justin smiled. “Well I better head out. I have tour rehearsal in a half an hour. I hope you feel better.”

“Ok Justin, bye.” Theresa said as she watched Lisa, Justin and Kyle leave the room, and watched A.J reenter still on his cell.

“Yeah, you wanna talk to her? Ok, hold on.” A.J said into it. “Here Theresa, Abby wants to talk to you.”

“Abby…” Theresa trailed off, over the past week her and Abby had become good friends and she was grateful for that. Taking the phone, Theresa smiled, “Hey girl.”

“Hey, how are you?”

“I’m ok. Just sore.” Theresa laughed quietly closing her eyes.

“Oh, sorry. So when ya gonna get out?”

“Tonight.”

“Cool, maybe we could go shopping or something.” Abby requested.

“We could, I’ll have to check my schedule.”

“Ok, fine with me. Well I guess I better let you go.” Abby said.

“Alright, bye Abby.”

“Bye.” With that Abby and Theresa both hung up.

“She’s so sweet.” Theresa grinned handing the phone back to A.J.

“Yes, she is. She keeps asking me about you.” A.J nodded.

“God, I can’t wait to get home…” Theresa trailed off watching the doctor walk in the room.

“Good evening Ms. Bischoff.” He smiled looking down at her.

-Later that day-

Entering their apartment, A.J helped Theresa towards the couch as Stephanie checked their messages.

‘Message one: Hey girls, its Donna. Just calling to tell you that we have a promotional meeting tomorrow around 4pm so be there.’

‘Message two: Steph…umm…this is Kevin, I heard that Theresa went into surgery today. Please tell her that I hope she gets to feeling better.’

Stephanie frowned at the sound of his voice. She hated him after what he did, how could he if he loved her so much? Placing her finger on the delete button she deleted the message from her ex.

“Steph, how called?” Theresa called as she flicked on the TV from the remote.

“Donna….” Stephanie trailed off then said, “and Kevin.”

“Kevin!?” A.J and Theresa said in unison.

“Yeah, he wanted me to tell you that he hopes you get to feeling better.” Stephanie hissed the bitterness in her voice.

“God! Everyone makes it sound like I have a liver transplant or something.” Theresa giggled then noticed her friend leave the room rolling her eyes and enter her bedroom. “Poor Steph, it makes me mad that Kevin did that to her.”

“Baby, maybe he had a reason or something.” A.J stated taking up for his friend.

“Oh so your on his side?” Theresa arched a brow at her boyfriend. “A.J, he broke her heart!”

“I know, I’m just saying. Maybe he had a reason. He told me that he loves her very much, but he doesn’t want to tie her down on making it big in her career.” A.J commented.

“Would you do that?” Theresa asked out of the blue looking down at her hands.

“Huh? Naw! Kevin might have a point, but he’s an idiot for loosing something he loves.” A.J chuckled placing his hand on her chin and lifting her lips to his kissing them lightly.

-In Stephanie’s room-

Sitting Indian style on the floor of her bedroom, Stephanie ran her fingers slowly over the strings of her guitar lightly singing the lyrics she had written on the paper in front of her.

“I was walking down the street one day,
then I saw you I didn't know what to say,
you're eyes we're shining,
your smile was o kind,
When I saw you I wanted you to be mine…” Stopping she wrote down some more lyrics and continued,

“Maybe I don't have blonde hair you like
Or maybe I don't have eyes like the sky
And I'm not sure if I'm the girl in your dreams
but I can show you what love means…” Stopping again, Stephanie sat down her guitar and placed her head in her hands as she pulled her knees to her chest and began to cry.

“Why am I this upset over a guy?” She questioned herself.

“Because, you loved him.” Theresa’s voice filled the room. Looking up Stephanie noticed her friend standing there.

“How long have you been…”

“Long enough to hear your song.” Theresa cut her off walking towards her and sitting next to her. “Its pretty so far.”

“Thanks, where’s J?”

“He had to leave.” Theresa replied.

“Theresa, I loved him so much.” Stephanie began to cry as Theresa pulled her into a tight embrace and let her friend weep on her shoulder.

“Shh. Steph, I promise, it’ll be ok.” Theresa reassured rubbing Stephanie’s back in smooth strokes trying to calm her down. “It’ll be ok.”
