"Hey Kev?" Stephanie called out but didn’t get a response. She began wondering through the apartment, checking in each of the rooms. Finally, she walked into her bedroom. She grinned when she found the bed neatly made and looked around the room for him. A sudden breeze entered the room, causing the white lace drapes over the French doors the sway out towards her. She knew where he was. Stephanie peeked out the open doors and found Kevin with his back to her, leaning on the rail with both arms. He looked so lonely, just staring out at the restless ocean waters. She stepped out onto the balcony silently and stayed behind him, wishing she was in his strong arms as they stared out at the beach.
Kevin watched a young couple settle on the beach for a picnic and begin to make out, forgetting the entire world around them. He whole-heartedly wished it was him and Stephanie down there, holding each other, caressing each other. He shivered at the thought. A gentle hand touched his arm, causing him to jump slightly.
Stephanie giggled a little and looked out over the water. Kevin lost control of him self for a moment and pulled the claw-clip out, letting her raven black hair cascade down her back. A single tear dropped from his eye as he stared at her for only a moment before turning away so she couldn’t see his tears. But she already had.
"Sorry, I just always liked your hair down." He murmured, keeping his face from sight. Stephanie suddenly slid under his arm and stood in front of him. She took his face in her soft hands and let her thumbs carefully wipe the tears from his cheeks. She pulled his face closer to hers until her lips were only a breath away from his. She softly rubbed her nose against his and wrapped her arms around his shoulders.
Kevin met her chocolate eyes and stared at her intensely, waiting for her to tell him it was all okay again. Waiting for her to tell him to kiss her again. She lowered her gaze for only a second, fixing the silver chain around his neck then met his emerald stare again, lightly brushing her fingers against the ticklish hairs on the back of his neck.
This was all Kevin needed. He immediately crushed his lips against hers. They kissed passionately, holding and caressing each other slowly. Kevin’s kisses descended off her soft lips, to her chin and neck, then finally tracing the dangerous V of her sweater.
"Kevin, we really shouldn’t do this out here. And before we even consider this, we have to talk." Stephanie whispered softly, running her fingers through his hair. He looked up at her and nodded, taking her small hand in his and walking back into her bedroom. They down sat down at the foot of the bed and stared at the floor silently. Finally Stephanie spoke up.
"Well, umm, who should go first?" she asked, twirling a bit of her long hair around her finger. Kevin was to busy staring at her to even realize she had said anything.
"What? Oh, I guess since I’ve got the most to apologize for, I should go first." He answered finally, watching her kick off her shoes and settle Indian-style on the bed. "That night, I said a lot of things that I shouldn’t have. It’s just, I guess I was jealous of how much time you and Brian got to spend together. I mean, he saw you more than I did. I know it’s probably mostly my fault, I’m always busy with something else and I neglect you, but I honestly love you and every since that night you left, I’ve been a wreck. The guys will agree when I say that I was a mindless ass without you." He explained, finally pausing to catch his breath, then continued, "But, Stephanie, I never ever meant to make you feel like I didn’t love you or care about you. I’m sorry I hurt you."
Stephanie sat silently in front of him, waiting for him to finish before she hugged him. Kevin hugged her back tightly, not sure if he had actually felt a tear leak through his shirt and onto his shoulder. He pushed her back a little and found a fresh set of tears streaming down her face. He caressed her cheeks with both his palms, removing any and all tears there. He kissed her forehead and moved away to let her speak.
"Kevvy, I’m sorry I made it a habit to spend all my time with Brian, but he was like my own personal counselor. He was and is still like my big brother, I just found myself able to say something to him that I felt stupid saying around you. He was the first person there for me when Xavior called because, when I called you I remembered that they make you turn off your cell phone and beeper while in there so it doesn’t mess everything up. So, I called Brian to ask if he could go trade spots with you, so you could come home. When he asked why I just broke into tears and he rushed over. And he stayed with me until you got home because he was scared to leave me here by myself. But I really wanted you there. I’ve been so lonely without you near me." Stephanie said, trying to fight back the tears that threatened to fall. She felt like such a child when she cried in front of him. He never made her feel that way, but she thought it anyway.
Kevin knew she was trying to maintain composure and pulled her slender body to his. He carefully laid them back onto the bed and ran his fingers through her soft hair. He hummed a few notes from a song from the ‘Millennium’ album and began to sing to her, slowly lulling her to sleep.
"It’s not that I can live without you,
It’s just that I don’t even want to try,
Every night I dream about you
Every since the day we said goodbye
If I wasn’t such a fool
Right now I’d be holding you
There’s nothin’ that I wouldn’t do
Baby if I only knew…" Kevin continued the entire song of ‘Back to Your Heart’, then finally looked down at her. She was sleeping peacefully against him, nuzzling her face against his tee-shirt. He situated them so they would both be more comfortable, he laid on his back and let her curl up on her side and rest her head on his shoulder. Just as Kevin drifted into slumber, he heard her murmur something in her sleep.
"I love you Kevvy."
