SUCCESS DAYS IN DECEMBER




DECEMBER 30.. CARL ERSKINE I mailed Mr. Erskine my baseball and asked him to sign his name along with "pitched 2 no-hitters". Today I got the ball back with much more than I asked. On the top panel, sweet spot, and 2 side panels he wrote different aspects of his career. I have only had the ball afew hours and it has already become one of my favorites. Sent to his home on Nov. 22nd.

DECEMBER 28.. VERN LAW Won the Cy Young Award with a 20-9 record and a league-high 18 complete games in 1960. In that same season he was the winning pitcher in the All-Star game. On July 19, 1955 he pitches 18 innings in beating Milwaukee 4-3, giving up just nine hits and fanning 12. He signed my baseball with "1960 Cy Young" under his name as requested but he signed the panel "Pittsburgh Pirates 1950-1967" which was a surprise. Was sent to his home on Dec. 16th.

DECEMBER 26.. BOB FELLER The winningest pitcher in Cleveland Indians history and he threw three no-hitters and 12 one-hitters in his career. He was an 8 time All=Star. He led the league 6 times in wins and 7 times in strikeouts. His fastball was clocked at 107 m.p.h. once. He lost nearly four seasons to the Navy during WWII, earning eight battle stars. Was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1962. He signed my baseball and included "HOF 62" as requested for his fee of $20. Was sent to his home on Dec. 8th.

CHUCK TANNER Played from 1955-62 and became the third pinch hitter ever to homer on the first major league pitch he saw. He won 1352 games as a manager in 1970-88 for the Pirates and Braves. His 1979 Pirates defeated Baltimore in the World Series after falling behind three games to one. Sent in early August of this year c/o his home.

DECEMBER 23.. GEORGE FOSTER One of the most underrated member of the "Big Red Machine". Won the 1977 MVP award and signed my baseball that was sent on Oct. 30th. His fee is $25 but he returned my check with VOID written on it. An early gift for me. Sometimes he will do this but don't count on it.

DECEMBER 20.. RAY MILLER Manager in 1995-96, 98-99 Twins, Orioles. Was also a longtime pitching coach. Signed my card and included 3 autographed 3by5s. Sent to his home on Dec 12th.

DECEMBER 18.. BILL HANDS Played from 1965-75 for the Giants, Cubs, and Twins. Won 20 games and led Cubs' staff with a 2.49 ERA in 1969. Signed my card that was sent to his home on Nov 26th.

SAM CALDERONE Only played 91 games in his short career that was in 1950, 53-54 for the Giants and Braves. Thanks goes out to Joe of NBO Baseball for the correction of the teams.Signed my card that was sent to his home last year. You just never know sometimes. He added a $.03 cent stamp and included a small hand-written note thanking me for my interest.

DECEMBER 16.. DAVE DRAVECKY Played from 1982-89 for the Padres and Giants. Was elected to the All-Star team in 1983. His career and almost his life was cut short due to a cancerous tumor in his pitching arm. He had his left arm amputated to alleviate chronic infection and nerve damage. Signed in about a month which was sent to his home.

DECEMBER 13.. KEVIN COLLINS Played third and second base from 1965-71 for the Mets, Expos, and Tigers. He signed my card that was sent on Dec. 4th.

DECEMBER 11.. STEVE HARGAN A right handed pitcher that played from 1965-77 for several teams. He was an All-Star in 1967 with Cleveland and in 1970 he went 11-3 with a 2.90 ERA. He signed my card that was sent to his home on Nov. 29th.

DECEMBER 10.. FRANK QUILICI Played 2B and 3B in 1965, 67-70 for the Twins. He was also the manager for the Twins in 1972-75. Was sent to his home on November 29th.

DECEMBER 9.. SHANNON STEWART A lifetime .302 hitter signed my card that was sent either spring training of 2001 or late in the 2001 season. About 1 year to a year and a half wait. The 28 year old is one of my favorite Blue Jays. He added a 3 cent stamp to my envelope.

MARTY MARION Last week he signed my baseball and today I received a card that I sent to him on August 14th of 2001. Yep, another year plus wait. Maybe he liked my letter or maybe he is signing more but he has been a somewhat difficult player to get by mail. You got to get him at the right time.

DECEMBER 7.. RICK WISE Returned my card unsigned and included a typed letter requesting $3 for cards and $15 for baseballs. Like Mark of Mark's Signing Bonus, I had a long wait for a reply. Mine was 6 months and Mark's was 14 months. Will send back with the $3 and click on Wise's name to read the letter I recieved to get some information if you want to write to him.

DECEMBER 6.. MARTY MARION One of the best shortstop in the '40's. With Marion at SS, the Cardinals won four pennants, three World Championships, and he was named to seven NL All-Star squads from 1941 through 1949. An injury cut his career short, and he managed for the Cardinals in 1951. He took over for manager Rogers Hornsby early in the 1952 season with the Browns. He was named the 1944 MVP. He signed my baseball and added "MVP N.L. 1944" as requested. Was sent to his home on Nov. 20th. NOTE: Marion is hard to get an auto from in the mail, I was lucky.

DECEMBER 3.. JIM LEYLAND He was the manager in 1986-99 for the Pirates, Marlins, and Rockies. He helped rebuild the Pirates and he was voted Manager of the Year 1990 and 1992. He signed my card that LaRussa had already signed from the 2002 season. Was sent on Nov. 14th c/o his home.

NOVEMBER 29.. PAT CORRALES He spent much of his career as the backup catcher to Johnny Bench in Cincinnati. He managed the Rangers, Phillies, and the Indians. On 7/18/83 he became the only manager to be fired with his team in first place when Philadelphia fired him. Was sent to his home on Nov. 18th.

NOVEMBER 25.. AL ROSEN He won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1953 when he led the AL in homers (43) and RBI (145). He quit at age 32 to sell stocks and bonds. He reentered baseball 20 years later as president of the Yankees, then the Astros, and then president and general manager of the Giants. Was sent c/o home on Nov. 13th.

NOVEMBER 23.. FERNANDO VALENZUELA The first rookie to win the Cy Young Award in 1981 and he also won the '81 ROY. He was an All-Star in 1981-86. He won a Silver Bat in 1983 and a Gold Glove in 1986, pinch hit on occasion, and even played outfield during a 21-inning game. One of favorite players growing up. He signed my baseball "Fdor Valenzuela 1981 Cy Young ROY". Sent to his home on Nov. 13th.

NOVEMBER 20.. TOM BROWNING Surprise here. A very hard auto to get by mail. Unfortunally, I do not have a date on this one but it came back with the .34 cent stamp on it. I think I used the home addy from Smalling's or I tried c/o Reds this spring training or Cinergy. Totally forgot this one.

NOVEMBER 16.. GOOSE GOSSAGE The 9 time All-Star and in the top ten in All-Time Saves with 310. Goose usuallys signs in good return times but I had to wait a bit for my ball. He signed my baseball that was sent to his home on Aug. 21st. I requested "310 saves" but he added his uniform number under his name on the sweet spot.

NOVEMBER 14.. FRANK HOWARD Won the 1960 NL Rookie of the Year and led the league in HRs in 1968 and 1970. All-Star in 1968-71. He also managed for the Padres and Mets in '81 &'83. Signed my card that was sent to his home in exactly a week.

CLAUDE OSTEEN An All-Star in 1967, 1970, and 1973. He was the Dodgers' third starter behind Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale with the fourth being Don Sutton. Sent to his home on Oct. 13th.

NOVEMBER 12.. JEFF BURROUGHS He led the league in RBIs he won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1974. He signed my card that was sent to his home on Oct. 23rd.

C.C. SABATHIA The 22 year old is 30-16 in his first two seasons in the big leagues. Looks like he is catching up on his mail. Sent to spring training of this year.

NOVEMBER 8.. BOBBY SHANTZ Went 24-7 for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1952 as he won the Most Valuable Player. Won Gold Glove award from 1957-64. Played for 7 teams from 1949-64. He signed my ball with"52 MVP, 8 time All-Star" as requested. Sent on the same day as Sievers which was October 30th.

NOVEMBER 7.. ROY SIEVERS American League Rookie of the Year in 1949 with the St. Louis Browns. Roy and Jimmie Foxx are the only players to pinch-hit grand slams in both the AL and NL. Was an All-Star in 1956,57, and 59. Led the AL in homers with 42 and RBIs with 114. Signed my baseball with "1949 R.O.Y." as requested. Sent to his home last week on October 30th.

NOVEMBER 5.. YOGI BERRA The day after I talked to Dale, I recieved my ball from LTD. The 1951, 1954, and 1955 MVP signed my AL baseball and included "HOF '72" as requested. Paid $30 for it and the HOF was supposed to be extra but no charge. The man know to millions that don't even know baseball included his invoice which he also signed as well as his son, Tim. Sent to LTD Enterprises on October 12th.

NOVEMBER 1.. PHIL CAVARRETTA Played 1st and outfield in 1934-55 for the Cubs and White Sox. He was manager in 1951-53 for the Cubs. An All-Star in 1944, 46, 47 and he won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1945. Signed my baseball that was sent to his home on Oct. 21st.

OCTOBER 30.. LARRY DIERKER All-Star in 1969 and the 1971 Manager of the Year in 1998. In 1969 became the first Astro to win 20 games. He signed my card that was sent to his home on Oct. 21st.

OCTOBER 28.. DWIGHT EVANS The 3 time All-Star and 8 time Gold Glove winner signed my baseball. Sent to his house exactly a week ago to his home.Only Carl Yastrzemski played more games for the Boston Red Sox.

BOB BRENLY The Giants' starting catcher from 1984 to 1987. He was signed as a third baseman out of Ohio University (where he tied Mike Schmidt's single-season HR record). Was sent to the D-Backs on Aug. 24th.

MIKE CUBBAGE Played from 1974-81 for the Rangers, Twins, and Mets. Was sent to his home on Oct. 21st.

JACK McKEON Trader Jack has been managing since 1973 off and on with the latest job with Cincinnati which Boone replaced him. He signed my card which was also sent on Oct. 21st.

OCTOBER 23..JOE NUXHALL REDS broadcaster and played in the big show when he was 15 and went back to high school after 1 season. Returned to the majors later. All-Star in 1955, 56. I asked him to put "Voice of the Reds" under his name but I am still happy. Sent the baseball to his home on October 18th.

OCTOBER 22..EDDIE MURRAY A friend of mine and fellow collector went to Virgina last Friday to the autograph show where he met Murray. He signed 2 balls and this card. Russell would not part with a ball, but the card will do. He said that he was nice and signed for free for a while. Just wished I was there....Thanks Russ!

OCTOBER 21..FERGIE JENKINS The Hall of Famer signed my baseball and included “HOF 91” as requested. He led the league in wins in 1971 and 1974 and led the league in strikeouts in 1969. He won 284 games (26th All-Time) and struck out 3,192(11th All-Time). He was elected to the Hall with Gaylord Perry and Rod Carew in 1991. I sent $15 with the ball to his home. Was sent on October 11.

OCTOBER 19..SPIDER JORGENSEN Spider only played a little over 200 games, but he is always one of the nicest and dependable as they come. He included a picture as he does 100% of the time. Sent to his home on Oct. 1.

OCTOBER 15..WAYNE KRENCHICKI Played for the Orioles, Reds, Tigers, and Expos from 1979-86. Was sent to his home on Sept. 30th.

OCTOBER 9..CHARLIE LEA An excellent starter for the Expos for several seasons, Lea was the NL's starting and winning pitcher in the 1984 All-Star Game, then saw his career ruined by arm problems that forced him to miss the entire 1985 and 1986 seasons. Signed very quickly from home. Sent on October 1st.

OCTOBER 7..OZZIE SMITH the best defensive shortstop of the 1980s and most likely the best ever. "Wizard of Oz" dominated baseball with his breathtaking, and often game-saving, defensive play. An All-Star in 1981-92 and 1994-96. A Gold Glove Award winner from 1980-92 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2002. Sent c/o Baseball HOF on Sept. 17th.

OCTOBER 4..DICK WILLIAMS Played from 1951-1964 and managed from 1967-69, 71-88. The only manager to win pennants with three different teams (the Red Sox, A's, and Padres). Sent to his house on Sept. 26th.

OCTOBER 2..PRESTON WARD Played from 1948-1959 with several teams. He was the last person to homer in the 1953 season,it was the 1,197th home run hit in the big leagues that year, then a ML record. The ball and the bat used by Ward were sent to the Hall of Fame. Sent to his home at least 2-3 months ago, unsure of the exact date.

SUCCESS DAYS IN SEPTEMBER

SEPTEMBER 30..HAROLD BAINES An All-Star in 1985-87, 89, 91, and 1999 and was a great hitter. Although he played his first six seasons as an outfielder, Baines has driven in more runs as a designated hitter than anyone in American League history. He signed my baseball, which he included "373 HRs 1583 RBI's" as requested. Was sent to his home on Sept. 19th.

SEPTEMBER 25..RALPH BRANCA He threw the pitch Bobby Thomson hit for "the shot heard round the world" to win the 1951 playoff.In 1947, he won 21 games for the Dodgers at age 21. He made the All-Star team in 1947-49. Sent to his home on September 12th.

NICK ESASKY Esasky replaced Johnny Bench at third base for the Reds in 1983. In 1989, he set career highs with a .277 average, 30 homers and 117 RBIs with the Red Sox. The following season, Esasky developed an inner ear infection that caused vertigo and the debilitating dizziness that followed quickly removed him from the starting lineup. Sent to his home on Sept. 9th.

SEPTEMBER 23..JOHN FRANCO One of the most successful and durable relief pitchers in the game, John Franco is often overlooked as one of the best closers of all time. Was an All Star in 1986-87, 89-91 and led League in Saves in 1988, 90, 94. Sent to the Mets on August 30th.

SEPTEMBER 21..BARRY LARKIN Won the Gold Glove Award winner in 1994-96, 1995 Most Valuable Player, and an All-Star in 1988-91, 93-99. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, he decided at the age of five that he would someday replace his idol, Reds' shortstop Dave Concepcion. He has had the reputation as one of the best shortstops in the game while maintaining close ties to the Cincinnati community. This autograph success was a surprise. I have tried him last 4 years. Sent during spring training.

AL HOLLAND A left handed pitcher that played from 1977, 1979-87. He made the All-Star team in 1984. He was used as a reliever for several teams. Signed my card in two weeks c/o home.

SEPTEMBER 18.. PHIL RIZZUTO Played from 1941-1956 for the Yankees but served in the military in 42,43. Made an All-Star in 1942, 1950-53. He won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1950 and was elected to the Hall Of Fame in 1994. He sometimes charges but he never has for me. Sent to his home on Sept. 3rd.

SEPTEMBER 17.. JOHNNY PODRES He became a Brooklyn legend in 1955 when he pitched the Dodgers to their first-ever World Championship. In 1957 he led the NL in both ERA (2.66) and shutouts (6). In 1961 he won a career-high 18 games and led the NL in winning percentage(.783). Was an All-Star in 1958,60, and 1962. Sent to his home on Aug. 21st. Signed my 5x7 for $5. Also added a new link.

SEPTEMBER 14.. JOHN TUDOR Pitched from 1979-90 Red Sox, Pirates, Cardinals, and Dodgers. His best year was 1985 when he was 21-8 with a 1.93 ERA and led the National League with ten shutouts. Finished 2nd in the Cy Young Award behind Dwight Gooden. Was sent to his home on Sept. 2nd.

SEPTEMBER 13.. BILLY WILLIAMS Often overshadowed by flashier players during his day, he was a star for 14 full seasons as a Cub. From September 22, 1963 to September 2, 1970, he established a National League record of 1,117 consecutive games played that stood until Steve Garvey broke it in 1983. He won the 1961 Rookie of the Year award and was a seven time All-Star. His Hall of Fame career included 2,711 hits, 426 home runs, 1,475 RBI, and a .290 average. He signed my baseball that was sent to the Cubs on August 28th.

SEPTEMBER 12.. FRANK THOMAS Played from 1951-66 for several teams. He hit 30 home runs in 1953, his first full ML season with his hometown Pirates. He followed with 11 straight years with double-figure home runs, his best season in 1958 when he finished 2nd in the NL to Ernie Banks with 35 HR and 109 RBI. He was an All-Star outfielder in 1954-55 and was the NL's starting third baseman in the 1958 All-Star Game. Signed my 8 by 10 for $5 that was sent c/o home on August 4th.

SEPTEMBER 9.. J.W. PORTER Played catcher, first base, and outfield in 1952 and from 1955-59 for the Browns, Tigers, Indians, Senators, and Cardinals. Also sent a personal letter. Was sent to his home on August 23.

SEPTEMBER 6.. PETE ROSE The career leader in hits (4,256), singles (3,215), at-bats (14,053) and games played (3,562) and 17 time All-Star, 1963 Rookie of the Year, 1973 National League MVP, and the 1975 World Series MVP. In 1978, Rose mounted the last serious threat to Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hit streak. Rose hit safely in 44 straight games, the most by a NL player in the 20th century. On May 5, he became the youngest player ever to reach 3,000 hits and a feat many forget, Rose collected more than 1,000 hits after the age of 38. He signed my MVP ball but did not include “75 MVP” as requested. He signed for $50 check which was made out to and sent to promoter Pastime Productions in Hawthorne, NY where he was doing a signing.. One of my favorite players and one of my favorite successes.

SEPTEMBER 5.. JIM DELSING Played outifield from 1948-56 and 1960 for several teams. He was the Browns' pinch-runner in 1951 for the famous baseball midget Eddie Gaedel. He has a son named Jim who is a member of the PGA tour. The addy in Smalling's #11 is not valid. Thanks to that 'ole fellow at Mark's Signing Bonus for the updated address. SUCCESS DAYS IN AUGUST

AUGUST 31.. BRIAN DAUBACH He sits on fastballs and will go after the first good one he sees. He has good power to all fields. Signed my card that was sent on spring training.

AUGUST 29.. JOHNNY O'BRIEN Played 2nd base and a right handed pitcher in 1953, 55-59 for the Pirates, Cardinals, and Braves. On May 10th, 1953, Eddie and Johnny O'Brien become the first twins to play for the same team (Pittsburgh) in the same game.

AUGUST 28.. TIM RAINES All-Star in 1981-87 and in his last season the leadoff man has made a strong case for the Hall of Fame, with over 800 stolen bases (5th All-Time), 1,500 runs, and a .294 lifetime average. Was sent to the Marlins on May 21st.

AUGUST 26.. KEVIN BASS Bass had both power and speed, and was an NL All-Star in 1986 when he hit .311 with 20 HR and 22 stolen bases, helping the Astros to the NL West title. Sent almost exactly a month ago on July 25th c/o home.

AUGUST 24.. CARLOS LEE The type of hitter who causes opposing managers to pay attention during batting practice. He has a short, quick stroke that gives him power to all parts of the park. Was sent to the White Sox on August 3.

AUGUST 23.. JUAN GONZALEZ The Texas' slugger did not sign my card as excepted, but had to try him. Sent a pre-print postcard and a typed form letter saying he can not sign "due to volume". (More Rangers use the same letter.) Was sent to spring training.

JOHNNY SAIN Got my baseball back unsigned because he can no longer sign due to a stroke he had last April which I was unaware of. He always signed for myself and fellow collectors. Below is a scan of the letter his wife sent. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.



AUGUST 20.. ROLLIE FINGERS Just as famous for his handlebar mustache as his pitching, one of the greatest relief artist in baseball, lasting 17 years and compiling 6th most career saves (341). All-Star in 1973-76, 78, 81-82 Most Valuable Player Award in 1981. Signed my ball for $8 c/o his home. Was sent on June 14. AUGUST 17.. CLEM LABINE One of baseball's premier relievers in the 1950s. He helped the Dodgers to four pennants. He was 13-5 in a NL-leading 60 appearances with the 1955 World Champions and league leader in saves the next two seasons. He retired Dodger-killer Stan Musial 49 consecutive times. After leaving the Dodgers, Labine pitched for the Pirates in the 1960 WS. All-Star in 1956-57. Was sent to his home July 25th.

AUGUST 16.. BOB WELCH The 1990 Cy Young Winner had 27 victories. Welch once played left and right field in a 21-inning game. Signed both cards in ink pen. Was sent to his home on July 25.

AUGUST 15.. BRADY CLARK This one was sent to the Reds' spring training in March. Even came back with no extra postage due with the $.34 stamp.

BILL WERLE Left-handed pitcher that played from 1949-54 for the Pirates, Cardinals, and Red Sox. NL's top rookie lefthander in 1949. An arm injury cut his career short. Was sent to his home on July 25th.

AUGUST 13.. JON GARLAND The 22 year-old is 8-8 so far this season and should get better as he gets older. Was sent to White Sox on July 25th.

AUGUST 10.. JIM RIVERA An outfielder that played from 1952-61 for the Browns, White Sox, and A’s. An average player at the plate and an excellent fielder. In 1955 he swiped a league-high 25 bases. Was sent to his home on July 23rd.

AUGUST 9.. GENE HERMANSKI An outfielder that played in 1943and 46-53 for the Dodgers, Cubs, and Pirates. Was sent to his house 3 weeks ago.

AUGUST 8.. SOLLY HEMUS Played from 1949-59 for the Cardinals and Phillies and was manager in 1959-61 for the Cardinals. He led the NL three times in HBP and in 1952, Hemus scored 105 runs to tie teammate Stan Musial for the NL lead. Since 1959 there have been only five ML playing managers: Pete Rose, Frank Robinson, Joe Torre, Don Kessinger, and Hemus.

AUGUST 7.. SAL YVARS A catcher that played from 1947-54 for the Giants and Cardinals. Was sent to his home on July 22nd.

AUGUST 6.. KEN FORSCH Ken and his brother Bob are the only brothers to hurl no-hitters. In 1976 he was named to the NL All-Star team as a reliever and finished the season with 19 saves for the Astros. In 1981 he was named to the AL All-Star team for his work as a starter with the Angels. Was sent c/o home July 25.

AUGUST 5.. WILLIE WILSON he hit .300 for four successive seasons, and he had stolen more than 30 bases in 11 consecutive seasons through 1988. In 1980 Wilson became the 2ND player to collect 100 hits from each side of the plate in a season. He led the AL in triples 5 seasons. Sent c/o Lancaster JetHawks on July 24

TED LEPCIO Played from 1952-61 for the Red Sox, Tigers, Phillies, White Sox, and Twins. Made the Rookie All-Star team in 1952. Was sent c/o home on July 25.

AUGUST 1.. BOB WATSON Played from 1966-84 for the Astros, Red Sox, Yankees, and Braves. Made the All-Star team in 1973 and 1975. Sent c/o MLB last week on July 24.

IRV NOREN A lefthanded contact hitter and an excellent fielder, he was named to the All-Star team in 1954 when hit .319 as the Yankees' left fielder. He also played for the Chicago Gears of the NBA.

SUCCESS DAYS IN JULY

July 30.. BOB KENNEDY Played from 1939-47 for several teams. He also managed the Cubs from 1963 to early 1965 and the A's in their first year in Oakland (1968). His son, Terry, became a star catcher. Was sent to his house on July 23.

TOBY ATWELL A catcher that had a brief career form 1952-56 for the Cubs, Pirates , and Braves. Made the All-Star team in 1952. Was sent to his home on July 23 as well.

July 29.. CURT SIMMONS He became an important member of the NL champion Whiz Kids in 1950. He went 17-8 that season despite missing more than a month for National Guard training. Because his unit was activated, he missed the World Series. He returned in 1952 to go 14-8 with a league-high six shutouts. In 1953 he missed a month after slicing off part of his left big toe in a lawn mower accident. He recorded career-high 18 victories for the 1964 World Champion Cardinals. Was sent to his home on July 15.

TURK LOWN A right-handed pitcher in 1951-54 and 1956-62 for the Cubs, Reds, and White Sox. When he was switched to relief, he blossomed into a star. His top season was 1959, when he helped the White Sox to their first pennant in 40 years with a 9-2 mark, an AL-leading 15 saves, and a 2.89 ERA. Was sent to his home on July 13.

BILL HUNTER Was regared as a flashy fielder, Hunter was an All-Star as a Browns rookie in 1953. Played SS-2B in 1953-58 for the Browns and Yankees. He was the Rangers' Manager in 1977-78. Was sent to his home on July 15.

LEE ELIA A shortstop in 1966 and 1968 for the White Sox and Cubs. Was manager in 1982-83 for the Cubs and 1987-88 for the Phillies.

July 26.. KEN BRETT. Overshadowed by younger brother George, Ken became the youngest pitcher to pitch in a World Series game in 1967. He also set a record for pitchers in 1973 by homering in four straight starts with the Phillies. All-Star in 1974. He signed my card in 3 weeks care of his home.

July 23.. PAUL MINNER A left-handed pitcher that played in 1946 and 1948-1956 for the Dodgers and Cubs. Against the Yankees in the 1949 World Series, the stadium lights were turned on, and he became the first to pitch under artificial lighting in the World Series. Was sent to his home on June 10.

ED O'BRIEN Played SS and OF in 1953 and 1955-1958 for the Pirates. Had a twin brother named Johnny on the same team. The brothers got great pleasure from confusing managers, and the Topps baseball card company, as to who was who; Topps solved the problem one year by putting both of them on one card. Was sent to his home on July 10.

July 20.. BEN SHEETS Finally a success from a current player. Made the All-Star team in 2001 as a rookie. Was sent to him in spring training.

July 18.. BOB MILLIKEN A right-handed pitcher that played in the early 50's for the Dodgers. While in the Army in 1951 and '52, he pitched on the same team as Phillies' Curt Simmons. Was sent to his home on July 1st.

July 17.. FREDDIE MARSH An infielder that played in 1949, 1951-56 for the Indians, Browns, Senators, and White Sox. Was sent to his home last week on July 10.

DICK BOKELMANN Pitched in St. Louis for the Cards in 1951-53. Was sent to his home on July 1st.

July 15.. ROBIN ROBERTS The winningest right-hander in Phillips history. He won 20 games six straight years, from 1950 to 1955, with league highs in wins for four straight, starting in 1952, when he went 28-7. He once pitched 28 straight complete games. All-Star in 1950-56 and led League in wins from 1952-55. Was elected to the Hall Of Fame in 1976. Was sent to his house on June 1.

TIM FOLI Played shortstop for several different teams from 1970-84. He was the Mets' first draft pick in June 1968 and he became the first Expo ever to hit for the cycle on April 21, 1976. He also included an 8/10-autographed story about his life and his acceptance of Jesus Christ. Was sent c/o Cincinnati Reds on May 15.

CAL HOGUE He played briefly for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1952-54. Was sent to his house on June 9.

July 13.. BOB FRIEND A right-handed pitcher that played from 1951-66 for the Pirates, Yankees, and Mets. An All-Star in 1956, 58, 60. In 1955, he became the first to lead a major league in ERA (2.83) while pitching for a last-place team. In 1958 he tied Warren Spahn for the NL lead with 22 wins. Friend shares the NL record with two All-Star Game victories (1956 and 1960). Sent to his home on June 6th.

JIM GREENGRASS Had a short career as he played from 1952-56 for the Reds and Phillies. He had 100 RBI his first full season and 27 HR his second. His promising career was cut short by phlebitis. He wrote a very nice letter and also telling me that he stayed in a hotel last week in the town I live in. Was also sent on June 6th.

BOB ADDIS He also had a short career as he played outfield from 1950-53 for the Braves, Cubs, and Pirates. He signed my card that was sent to his home on June 8th.

July 12.. RALPH HOUK As a player, he was a backup catcher to Yogi Berra. Later in life, he replaced Casey Stengel as Yankee manager in 1961, winning World Championships his first two seasons and adding a pennant in 1963. Houk managed the Yankees (1966-73), the Tigers (1974-78), and the Red Sox (1981-84). Was sent on June 28th c/o home.

BEN GRIEVE A very strange non-success. I sent this card almost 3 years ago. Sent it back unsigned and someone even added extra postage. Well, got my card back.

July 11.. JOHNNY KLIPPSTEIN A right-handed pitcher that played from 1950-67 for 8 different teams. Sent to his home on June 29.

July 8..PHIL CAVARRETTA Played 1st and outfield in 1934-55 for the Cubs and White Sox. He was player-manager in 1951-53 for the Cubs. An All-Star in 1944, 46, 47 and he won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1945.

HANK BAUER He played outfield in 1948-61 for the Yankees. From 1956 to 1958 he set a WS record with a 17-game hitting streak. He was traded to the A's which brought Roger Maris to New York. An All-Star in 1952-54 and a manager in 1961-62, 64-69 for the Orioles. He led the O's to the 1966 World Championship.

PAUL LaPALME He pitched a shutout in his first ML game but suffered for much of his career with some of baseball's worst teams, the lefty pitched from 1951-57 for the Pirates, Cardinals, Reds, and White Sox. He included a nice glossy b&w photo that I DID NOT request and a nice 1 page letter that also was NOT requested. I am sending him a thank you note tomorrow morning....really like players that are like that.

MILT BOLLING Had a brief career playing SS-2B in 1952-58 for the Red Sox, Senators, and Tigers. Also signed my '53 reprint that was sent to his home on June 29th as well.

July 5..DICK GROAT An All-Star in 1959-60, 62-64 and he won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1960. He batted over .300 four times and he was an All-American basketball player at Duke for 2 straight seasons. Signed my '53 reprint that was sent to his home on June 28.

July 3.. VERN LAW In 1960, he won the Cy Young Award with a 20-9 record and a league-high 18 complete games. He signed my '53 reprint with a black sharpie. Sent to his home on June 24.

July 2..BOBBY THOMSON He hit what is perhaps the most famous home run in baseball history. The "shot heard 'round the world" on October 3, 1951, a three-run, ninth-inning homer off Brooklyn pitcher Ralph Branca, capped the Giants' historic comeback to win the NL pennant. He signed my baseball on the sweet spot with "shot heard 'round the world October 3, 1951" under his name as requested. The ball was sent to his home on June 24.

DUANE PILLETTE The right handed pitcher lost the last game the Browns played in St. Louis, 2-1(9/27/53). He moved with the franchise to Baltimore and recorded the Orioles' first win in 1954. Played in 1949-56 with the Yankees, Browns , Phillies.

June 22.. BOBBY MORGAN He was named International League MVP in 1949 and played in 1950, 52-58 for the Dodgers, Phillies, Cardinals, and Cubs as a SS and 3B. Was sent to his home on June 10.

June 21..WARREN SPAHN He also signed my baseball that was sent on the same day Snider and Anderson's balls were sent. The all-time winnest lefty included his HOF '78 as well. I sent $5 to his home.

CHUCK STOBBS On April 7, 1953, Stobbs threw the pitch that Mickey Mantle hit out of Griffith Stadium for his famous 565-foot home run. The left handed pitcher played from 1947-61 for the Red Sox, White Sox, Senators , and Cardinals.

June 20..DUKE SNIDER Signed my baseball and included his HOF '80 under his name on the sweet spot as requested in my letter. My success with him in May was free but I included $5 with this one.

SPARKY ANDERSON Also signed a ball with his HOF 2000 on the sweet spot as requested but 'ole Spark always signs for free. He even returned my blue bic. Both were sent on June 10 using 3 day mail.

GUS NIARHOS Played from 1946-55 with the Yankees, White Sox, Red Sox, and Phillies as a catcher. Sent on June 11.

June 17..ROY SIEVERS American League Rookie of the Year in 1949 with the St. Louis Browns. Roy and Jimmie Foxx are the only players to pinch-hit grand slams in both the AL and NL. Was an All-Star in 1956,57, and 59. Led the AL in homers with 42 and RBIs with 114. Was sent to his home 10 days ago.

June 12..BOBBY SHANTZ Went 24-7 for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1952 as he won the Most Valuable Player. Won Gold Glove award from 1957-64. Played for 7 teams from 1949-64. Was sent to his home on June 3.

DUSTY RHODES In the 1954 World Series, he led the Giants' sweep of the Indians. His pinch homer off Bob Lemon with two on in the 10th inning won Game One. In Game Two, he tied the game with a pinch single off Early Wynn in the fifth and then homered off Wynn in the seventh for the final run in a 3-1 win. And his pinch single in the third inning of Game Three drove in two runs. Was also sent to his home on June 3.

June 10..GARRETT ANDERSON Number 10 in the AL with 12 homeruns and has 44 RBIs while batting .313! Always signs and is one of the best signers by mail. Sent to the team on May 3. Also added a new link.

June 7.. LEW BURDETTE Won 20 games in 1958 and 21 in '59. His 2.70 ERA topped the NL in 1956. In two All-Star Games, he allowed only one run in seven innings. Won three complete games in the 1957 World Series and he no-hit the Phillies on August 18, 1960. Sent to his home on May 18.

June 6..KENT TEKULVE The all-time major league leader in relief appearances with 1,050. He went 10-1 as a set-up man for Goose Gossage in 1977. One of baseball's most successful relievers, ranking among the all-time leaders in games, saves, and relief wins. Sent to Washington Wild Things on May 31.

JUAN SAMUEL Samuel set a rookie stolen-base record of 72 in 1984 (broken by Vince Coleman the following year.) He became the only player in ML history to post double figures in doubles, triples, home runs, and stolen bases in each of his first four ML seasons. 2 time All-Star. Sent on May 15 c/o Detroit.

May 31..AL ROSEN He won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1953 when he led the AL in homers (43) and RBI (145). He quit at age 32 to sell stocks and bonds. He reentered baseball 20 years later as president of the Yankees, then the Astros, and then president and general manager of the Giants. Was sent c/o home on May 21.

May 28.. RAFAEL PALMEIRO Did not sign my card and sent a pre-printed postcard and a form letter that was also pre-printed. Was sent on spring training.

ALVIN DARK In 1969 fans chose Alvin Dark as the top shortstop in Giants' history. Was the Rookie of the Year in 1948 and an All-Star in 1951-52, 54. As a manager, Dark won the 1962 NL pennant for San Francisco and the 1974 World Championship with Oakland. Was also a manager for the Indians, Padres. Was sent on May 21 c/o home.

May 20.. RAY MILLER Pitched 10 seasons in the minors, never making the show. A former top-notch pitching coach that went on to manage the 98, 99 Baltimore Orioles and 95,96 Minnesota Twins. He signed my card and included three different 3 by 5's that he autographed which I DID NOT ask for but a pleasant surprise. Signed 2 weeks c/o home.

SHAWON DUNSTON The first pick in 1982’s draft by the Cubs. 1988, 90 All-Star. Has played with 6 different teams and currently with the Giants. Sent to S.F. Giants on May 6.

GIL COAN Played outfield for the Senators , Orioles, White Sox, Giants from 1946-56. Signed my card and sent a small letter thanking me for my interest in him and baseball of old. Sent to his home on May 7.

May 16.. MIKE SWEENY Emerged as an offensive force in 2000 when he finished 2nd in the AL in RBIs with 144. Sweeny usuallys signs and has a wonderful autograph with #29 in his S. Sent to spring training.

May 15.. JOHN WOODEN Former great UCLA coach signed my index card, included a small note, and sent a signed business card. Sometimes he sends photo but he did not and I did not request one. Signed 2 weeks c/o home.

May 13.. STAN MUSIAL The 3-time MVP and a member of the 3,000 hit club sent me another postcard. Makes 6 postcards out of 6 requests (over a period of 3+ years)which I have stated to keep the postcard and asking for my card to be signed only. I have no luck with Stan the Man along with Phil Niekro. Was sent 1st week of January, a longer wait than usual.

May 8..RICHARD PETTY Ever now and then I send to a non-baseball athlete. The King of Nascar signed my card in about 3 weeks care of his enterprise.

May 6.. JIM PERRY Brother of HOFer Gaylord, signed my card (in blue ballpoint)in about two weeks. 20 game winner in 1969 and 1970 with the Twins. Won 215 games as Gaylord won 314. He won the Cy Young Award in 1970 and was an All-Star in 1961, 70, and 71. Was sent c/o home on April 23.

DON SHAW A former sinkerball specialist that was used in relief in 60's and 70's. He got the save in Tom Seaver's 1st win on April 20, 1967 and 2 years later, he won Montreal's inaugural game in relief on April 8, 1969 against the Amazing Mets. Was sent on April 26. Also signed my card in pen.

May 4.. HOWIE JUDSON Though he never had a winning season, he was a highly respected hurler. Pitched for the Reds and White Sox from 1948-54. Sent care of his home on April 26.

EDDIE PELLAGRINI Homered in his first ML at-bat. He was a fan favorite because of his hustle on the field. Played from 1946-54 for the Red Sox, Browns , Phillies, Reds, Pirates. Also sent on April 26 c/o his home.

May 3.. BILLY RIPKEN Cal Ripken Jr.s brother signed my card in 11 days care of his home. He only played in 912 games in 12 seasons. Usually signs in quick returns. Sent on April 22.

May 1.. JON LIEBER Broke out in 2001 with 20 victories ranking fourth in the NL behind Morris, Schilling, and Johnson. 1st Cub to win 20 games since 1992 when Greg Maddux did it. He is 3-0 so far this season with a 1.73 ERA. Sent to the Cubs on April 8.

JOE NUXHALL The youngest player of the 20th century to reach the majors signed by the Reds with special permission from his school principal. He was 15 years old when he made his major league debut. After the game, he returned back to high school and returned to the Majors in 1952. Was an All-Star in 1955-56. Now he is a longtime Reds broadcaster on the radio. Sent on April 11 c/o home.

April 29.. SID HUDSON His best major league mark was 17-16 as a rookie in 1940. At age 39, he became a longtime pitching coach, instructor, and scout. 1941, 42 All-Star. Sent on April 17.

April 27..SIBBY SISTI Former infielder that played for the Boston Braves from 1939-1952 and Milwaukee Braves from 53-54. He signed my card and included a pricelist for his autographed 8 X 10 for $4 each or 3 for $10. He has 7 to chose from. He had a small acting role as a coach in the movie The Natural. Sent on April 18.

April 26..JOSH TOWERS Baltimore pitcher in his second season should improve as time goes by. Was 8-10 in 2001. Sent on April 10 c/o Baltimore.

April 25..DOUG MIENTKIEWICZ He led the team in batting and won a Gold Glove last season. In high school he played tight end as a senior at Westminster Christian. Had a decent quarterback.....A-Rod!!!! Was sent on April 4.

JON GARLAND Another Return to Sender from the White Sox. Some have reports of success with them but I am 0 for 2. Was sent on April 8.

April 24..LLOYD McCLENDON Another skipper that needs some time to turn the Buc's around and he looks like he is on the right track from last years' 100 loses. Sent to Pittsburgh's stadium on April 17.

TIM RAINES JR. I used to watch his daddy burn up the bases, can't wait to see Jr.'s superior speed. Sent my card to the O's stadium on March 30.

ED BAILEY An All-Star in 1956-57, 60-61, 63. This former catcher had several 20+ homerun seasons in the 50's. When his brother Jim was on the 1959 Reds, they became part of one of baseball's few brothers on the same team at the same time. Sent on April 17.

HAL BROWN A knuckleball pitcher with outstanding control that walked just eight in 141 innings in 1963. Sent on April 18.

April 22..ART HOWE Long time manager. Managed Astros from 1989 till 1994 when he was replaced by Terry Collins as the Astros' manager. After a year under Don Baylor as a coach for the Colorado Rockies, Howe took over from Tony LaRussa as manager of the A's. He always signs with good return times. Mine was sent to the Oakland A's on April 6. 2nd Skipper in a row for me.

April 20.. MIKE HARGROVE This successful skipper has had a outstanding career as a manager and as a player. One of the best managers in the American League. 1975 All-Star. Card was sent at the beginning of the month care of team, regular season.

April 8.. JAY GIBBONS Young DH/Outfielder has impressive power potential and great opportunity in Baltimore. My first regular season success. Was sent on March 30th.

April 1.. CARLOS HERNANDEZ Young southpaw is supposed to be great! Just gave up 2 runs last season in 17 innings. Went on the DL after his 3rd start. If he stays healthy, he will be a name you will he hear on ESPN. Sent on Feb. 19 c/o spring training.

MIKE LOWELL This was a mystery and I had to search my records on this one. Sent my card LAST YEAR's spring training! Been gone for over a year, so you never give up on some. (had last year's stamp on it and never got charged the extra $.02)He is a consistent run producer in the middle of the Marlin's order. Finished with 100 RBIs last season. (Finally 2 autos in 1 day!)

March 30.. LOU PINIELLA Sweet Lou returned my card unsigned and sent a pre-print postcard. He signed last year's spring training and the scan is from last spring success.

March 28.. CURT SCHILLING Schilling and Randy Johnson are the best 1-2 power punch in the game. Had 22 victories in 2001 which is a career high. Signed my card in 34 days care of spring training.

March 23... JOE TORRE Joe finished second (behind Billy Williams) in 1961 NL Rookie of the Year voting. He was a 8-Time All-Star and won the 1971 Most Valuable Player Award. Manager of the Year in 1982, 98 . Usually does not sign during season. Signed my card that was sent on Feb. 13 care of spring training.(another 1 autograph day but 1 is better than none....still wishing for a double)

March 22... RAMON ORTIZ His ERA has declined every year and wins have increased since his rookie year in '99. Signed my card and included his number under his sig. Sent Feb. 20 c/o spring training.

March 21... STAN MUSIAL I saw many collectors that have gotten 'ole "Stan the Man" to sign their cards. I struck out again for the fifth time over 3 years. He sent the postcard (again) but for the first time, he kept my card. Been gone about a month c/o home.

March 18... RYAN DEMPSTER He led the majors with 112 walks but he has won 29 games the last 2 seasons with the Marlins. Young 24 year old has a bright future! Spring training success that was sent on Feb. 21. Also, added a new link. (Hopefully I'll get more than one autograph a day sometime soon.)

March 16...VERN LAW Law was a big part of the 1960 World Championship for Pittsburg, when he captured the Cy Young Award with a 20-9 record and had a league-high 18 complete games. Signed my card in 10 days care of his home.

March 13...PAUL MOLITOR He received due recognition by challenging baseball's great hitting streaks in 1987. The streak stopped at 39 games. Member of 3,000 hit club that usually signs within a reasonable amount of time. This one has been gone 6-7 months, sent last season.

March 11...B. J. RYAN Only pitched 50 or so innings last season, but this young southpaw will be a workhorse in the rotation in 2002 for the O's. Sent my card on Feb. 14. Spring training success.

March 9...MARK PRIOR Had an outstanding season last year at USC going 15-1, 1.69 ERA. WOW! Many experts think the second overall pick in the 2001 draft will be in a Cubs uniform by mid-season. Get him now while you can. Spring training success that has been gone 3 weeks.

March 7...BRUCE SUTTER 1973 arm surgery almost ended his career, but, with the help of Cub pitching coach Mike Roarke, he developed a split-finger fastball. The pitch dropped like a rock as it reached the plate. Saved 31 games while posting a microscopic 1.35 ERA in his 2nd season. In 1979 his 37 saves earned him the NL Cy Young Award. Also a 3 time All-Star. Sent card in early December. After 2 unsuccessful attempts with Sutter, he finally signed on the 3rd try!

March 6...AUBREY HUFF 25 year old has some potential. Almost averaged a RBI every 2 games last season. 3 weeks care of spring training.

March 5...VLADIMIR GUERRERO Had Montreal's first 30-30 season in the club's history. Another spring success that was sent Feb. 21.

March 4...D' ANGELO JIMENEZ The 24 year old prospect will take Rickey Henderson's leadoff spot at San Diego. Spring Training success that was mailed on Feb. 19.

DONNIE BRIDGES Only 23, but has a shot at a role in the Expos rotation. 6'4 power pitcher that has great control. Spring Training success that was also mailed on Feb. 19.

March 2...CHARLIE HOUGH Former pitcher that had a knuckler that would make players pray for a rain delay. He is currently a coach for New York Mets. 17 days care of spring training.
