James Asbury Berkley was born in Missouri in 1846. He was the son of Jesse
N. Berkley and Eliza Reynolds. When James was a small child, the family moved to
Grayson County, KY on what became known as the Berkley farm. He married Margaret

Jesse Berkley, James's father, was born in Kentucky in 1813. He was probobly

in Indiana in 1836, according to one source, or 1840, according to another. He
then moved to Missouri and later to Kentucky. He died on the Berkley farm in 1881.
Eliza outlived him by 20 years, dying in 1905.
