Ptolemy 1 Soter 305 BC to 285 BC

The first Ptolomy was one of Alexander the Great's most trusted generals and friends.After the death of Alexander,his large empire broke up and the different parts of it were claimed by Alexander's top ranking generals.Ptolomy took Egypt as his share of the pie and became king in 305 BC. He took Alexander as his capital andstarted a greek dynasty in Egypt that would remain soverign for 300 years.

As a ruler,Ptolomy 1 was shrewd and cautius yet generous as well.He managed to the Greeks and Macedonians as well as the native Egyptians that were living in Egypt during his rule.

Ptolomy 1 was a patron of the arts and learning and he drew around himself a great number of educated men from such fields as literature., philosophy and science.Ptolomy 1 was the ruler who laid the foundtation of the great library of Alexandria which would remain the greatest and largest library of the ancient world.Ptolomy 1 also built a museum which was used as a place of research in science.

Ptolomy 1 made his son joint ruler with him in 285 BC and died 2 years later.

Ptolemy 2 Philadelphus 285 bc to 486 BC

The second Ptolomy was of a more refined and peaceful nature.His reign was relativly quiet and uneventful.Most of the policies of this reign was devoted to the internal administration of the kingdom and to the arts and sciences

This king had a very lavish and luxourous court.The material and literary brilliance of the Alexandrian court of this time could be compared to the Versailles of Louis XIV.

Ptolomy 3 Euergetes 246 to 221 BC

This Ptolomy was the oldest son of Ptolomy 2 and his reign was marked with millitary glory and conquest.It is said that during his numerous campaigns, Ptolomy 2 reclaimed the Egyptian statues and artifacts that had been carried off to Babylon 3 centuries before during the Persian occupation of Egypt.

As well, this soverign was aslo celebrated for his patronage of the arts and sciences like his predecessors.During his reign the great library grew in size and importance with new additions.
