ROBIN'S DECISION

A Modern Fable

A great plumed bird in all its glory
Was looked upon with awe one day
By the fat, redbreasted Robin
Who accidently flew that way.

Robin looked and was astounded
To see a fellow so attired.
He wondered at the stately gait
And how the plumes had been acquired.

Were the brilliant feathers there
When first this bird cracked the shell?
Was his father of such stature?
Was his mother dressed as well?

Or was this bird a royal one
That at a fair, appointed hour
Was annointed with great beauty
By supreme and magic power?

Or was it earned from daily strife?
Or hunting just the proper food?
Or living by a secret code?
Or thinking in a pleasant mood?

Robin wished he knew the answer
For he believed there was a chance
That someday he may also be
A great plumed bird with stately stance.

To find the answer, he must proceed
And never rest until he learns
The secret of the great plumed bird
And for himself this beauty earns.

Upon his goal he set his mind
And flew away with hopes held high.
The great plumed bird observed his flight
and with a sigh said, "Oh, to fly."
