My interest in the "magickal" ties in with my interest in Sailor Moon. When I first started watching the show -- when I was about 12 years old -- what first intrigued me about the show was not only the concept of girl warriors, but of the different elemental and planetary aspects in the Scouts. For example, Raye represented the Planet Mars, her color was red, she could control the fire element, and her temper was indeed quite "fiery". At the time, I had no clue what all these meant (it just sounded really cool to me) but the following year, when I was thirteen, it was all revealed to me once emerged in the world of magick and mythology .(Note: If all this confuses you, I'm guessing you haven't been to my main site. (Check it out if you are interested). Anyways, as you all have probably noticed, there are a lot of..."things"... in the series that sound familiar to you: names, aspects, symbols, correspondances. I've put together a rather short list of some of the more obvious...observations. Obviously, my list is *FAR* from being complete --my goal is to merely point stuff out to you...show you that there *IS* another...deeper...meaning to some things. However, if you would like more observations and more detailed explanations, I suggest you check out (Maiden to Crone: A Guide to BSSM). In my opinion, being able to recognize the symbols and establish meaning to them makes the Sailor Moon series much more fun. Enjoy! =^^=

Princess Serenity: Named after Selene, a moon goddess in Greek mythology most famous for her love affair with Endymion (for more information, check out the Encyclopedia Mythica's entry on Selene). She is said to have worn robes, carry a torch, and wear a crescent moon on her brow.

The Crescent Moon: The crescent moon (new moon) represents the Maiden aspect of the Triple Goddess (Maiden/Mother/Crone), birth and initiation, virginity, beginnings, the hunt.

Endymion: In Greek mythology, Endymion was the mortal (some say shepard, others believed he may have been a king or a hunter) lover of the moon goddess Selene. Every night, she would kiss him to sleep and her love for him was so great, she asked Zeus to allow her beloved to choose his own fate. Endymion chose to maintain his youth and to be placed in an eternal sleep. He agreed and Endymion fell into an eternal sleep. Selene visited him every night. They had 50 daughters together.

Artemis: As Venus' companion and guardian to the Scouts, Artemis borrows his name from the Greek goddess of the moon and the wild hunt.

Luna: As Princess Serenity and the Scouts' guardian, Luna borrows her name from the personified Roman goddess of the moon. The goddess Luna is associated with the Greek goddess Selene.

Diana: Diana, Rini's guardian, borrow her name from the Roman moon goddess who also rules nature, fertility, and childbirth.

Sailor Mercury: The Planet Mercury rules such things as intelligence, cleverness, creativity, science, and perception. Correspondingly, in the series, Amy (Sailor Mercury) is a "girl genius" with an IQ of 300. She is the intelligent one of the group, studying to one day become a doctor (thus Science). Mercury is associated with the Water (and Air) element and the color blue. In Roman mythology, Mercury was the god of trade, profit, merchants and travelers, often associated with the Greek god Hermes.

Sailor Venus: The Planet Venus rules such things as love, harmony, friendship, and beauty. Correspondingly, in the series, Mina (Sailor Venus) is one of the prettier scouts. Justly, she is the defender of love and beauty. The actual associations of the planet Venus are the element Earth (and Water) and the colors green, rose, and indigo-- in the series, Venus' abilities are representative of one of the 5 elements in Asian belief. Mina is representative of the Metal element. Her color is orange (gold) and the elemental attributes of metal -- money and success -- can be found within her character for Mina is a girl who wants to be loved and adored.

Sailor Mars: The Planet Mars rules such things as strength, struggle, war, anger, conflict, aggression, victory, energy, ambition, goals, and argumenrts. Furthermore, the planet is associated with the color red and the Fire element. Correspondingly, in the series, Raye is the young priestess Scout with a "fiery" temper --meaning she is very quick to anger. The Planet Mars' attributes can be found within Raye's highly volatile temperament. She is very ambitious and sometimes arrogant and she is almost always arguing with Serena. Positively, Raye possesses the strength and energy attributes of Mars as her fire manipulation abilities (one of the four elements) makes her a powerful ally. In Roman mythology, Mars was the god of war associated with the Greek god Ares.

Phobos & Deimos: Raye's crow companions are named after the two moons of the planet Mars. Phobos means "fright" and in Greek mythology, he was the personification of fear and terror. Deimos means "fear".and he was the personification of dread. The two brothers were sons of Ares (Mars).

Sailor Jupiter: The Planet Jupiter rules such things as leadership, politics, power, honor, royalty, public acclaim and fame, responsibility, wealth, business, success, health, love, expansion, and growth. It is associated with deep blue and royal purple, and the Air (and Fire) element. In the series, Lita's abilities are representative of the Roman god Jupiter. In Roman mythology, Jupiter was the king of the gods, ruler of the sky and light. He was identical to the Greek god Zeus and was the controller of thunder and lightening. One of Jupiter's associations is the oak tree --Lita's element is wood (of the 5 elements of Asian belief) which can be seen in her special attack "Oak Evolution". The wood element is associated with creation which is fitting for Lita as she is a master creator in the kitchen.

Beryl/Metallia/Jadeite/Nephrite/Zoisite/Kunzite/Diamond/Emerald/Sapphire/Rubeus: All names of gemstones. (Note: Metallia comes from "Metal" and Rubeus comes from "Ruby").

Amazoness Quartet: Amazons. Warrior women said to have resided in Asia Minor (Turkey).

Sailor Scout Ceres (of the Amazoness Quartet): Ceres borrows her name from the old-Italian goddess of agriculture, grain and motherly love. Ceres is often associated with the Greek goddess Demeter. Ceres is a goddess of the harvest.

Sailor Scout Pallas (of the Amazoness Quartet): Pallas borrows her name from the Greek Titan Pallas. "Pallas" also comes from the Greek goddess Athena's titles: Pallas Athene.

Sailor Scout Juno (of the Amazoness Quartet): Juno borrows her name from the Roman queen of the gods and protector and counselor of Rome. Juno was also the protector and guardian of women. The Roman goddess is often associated with the Greek goddess Hera.

Sailor Scout Vesta (of the Amazoness Quartet): Vesta borrows her name from the Roman goddess of the hearth. Vesta is often associated with the Greek goddess Hestia.
