Danville (13-1) vs. Newport Central Catholic (10-4) December 1, 2000
Danville coach Sam Harp went from his traditional smash-mouth football to a more wide-open offense to better suit this team’s personnel. Evidently it has worked well as the Admirals have only lost to Boyle County in fourteen games. QB Adam Schott has completed 141 of 261 passes for 1948 yards and 22 touchdown passes. Stephen Grubbs has caught 31 passes for 453 yards and four TD receptions, while Jeremy Vaught has snared 20 passes for 307 yards and two scoring receptions. Andrew Hopwell has led the ground attack with 557 yards and 7 TDs on 77 carries. Tyson Prewitt carried the pigskin 84 times for 515 yards and nine scores.
Bob Schneider’s Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds lost their final two regular season games but stormed back through the playoffs to play for the championship today. 6-1 185 pound Jr. running back Steve Everson has rushed for 2075 yards and 27 scores on 347 carries. QB Jeff Smith has completed 87 of 202 passes for 1376 yards and 14 touchdown passes. Andy Brennenstuhl caught 50 passes this season for 598 yards and nine scoring receptions
The Danville Admirals took advantage of a key defensive play on their way to a 23-9 victory over Newport Central Catholic. Danville held a 7-3 lead in the third quarter with Catholic on the Danville 7 yard line. QB Jeff Smith fumbled the ball, Danville’s Chris Walker recovered the fumble and lateralled the ball to Julio Gallegos who ran 79 yards for a touchdown. Newport Central Catholic closed to within 14-9 on a great touchdown reception by Andy Brennenstuhl but could never overtake the Admirals.
The Danville defense came up huge today as they held star running back Steve Everson to only 79 yards rushing on 19 attempts. 6-1 280 defensive lineman Manning Tagarook had an excellent day on defense for Danville. 6-4 170 pound Sr. wide receiver Andy Brennenstuhl caught 6 passes for 69 yards and one touchdown.
