Madison Central (7-4) vs. Paul Laurence Dunbar (8-3) November 10, 2000

Madison Central defeated Paul Dunbar 14-9 two weeks ago but must duplicate the feat on the Bulldogs’ home turf to advance in the playoffs.  Madison Central coach Paul Rains installed lightning quick Lamar Hocker, a 5-6 148 pound So. at QB midway through the season.  This allowed Joey Duff to return to his FB spot.  Brandon Alexander and Tamiane Dean also add punch to the ground game.

Dunbar has been led this year by QB Chip Franklin who has completed 168 of 292 passes for 2525 yards and 27 TDs.  Franklin has also rushed the ball 95 times for 566 yards and six scores.  Corey Dunn has led the ground attack with 1013 yards on 138 carries and 14 touchdowns.  Derek Talbert has led the receiving corps with 44 receptions for 796 yards and 9 scores.  Nathan Jones, who has snared 40 passes for 614 yards and 7 scores, is still out with a separated shoulder.  The defense has been led by 6-3 227 pound Sr. LB Jacob Koch with 169 tackles this season.

Dunbar persevered on a muddy, slippery field in an old fashioned defensive battle by a score of 7-6.  The teams combined for a total of 15 punts and only 8 first downs.  Rick Jones, a 6-0 225 pound Jr., recovered a fumble at the Madison Central 22 late in the first period to give Dunbar a huge break. Chip Franklin scored from 1 yard out and Mike Gavenonis tacked on the extra point to give Dunbar a 7-0 lead with 11:18 remaining in the second quarter.

Lamar Hocker scored on a 3 yard run late in the third quarter to pull Madison Central within a single point.  Joey Herbst slipped on the muddy field while attempting the extra point and the kick was low and do good.  Dunbar intercepted two passes in the final minutes to preserve the victory.

The Dunbar defense was led tonight by Daniel Whitley, Jacob Koch, Rick Jones, and Jon Sikes who shut down the Indian offense.  The Madison Central defense also played well and was led tonight by LB Kyle Singleton.  Dunbar’s Corey Dunn was held to 1 yard on 10 rushing attempts.  Chip Franklin completed 9 of 15 passes for 94 yards.
