Introduction
These two match-ups played at Rawlings Stadium in Georgetown should provide an interesting night of football. The first game will pit (1-0) Bowling Green Purples coming off an 8-4 season against the home-standing (1-0) Scott County Cardinals coming off a 4-6 season. Scott County Coach Jim McKee returns 8 of 11 starters on both offense and defense, but will be answering the bell tonight without TE Drew Willis who caught 33 passes last year. Willis is recovering from an injury which could sideline him for two more weeks. While Coach Kevin Wallace lost several talented performers from his 1999 Bowling Green squad, he expects to have a solid group of performers back this year.
The second game will feature (1-0) Lexington Catholic coming off an 11-2 record against a (0-1) Lincoln County Patriots who finished with a 9-4 record last year. Coach Bob Sphire's Knights of Lexington Catholic will feature WR Clay Wolford who tallied 1368 receiving yards last year and scored 25 touchdowns. Coach Tim Estes of Lincoln County returns a team loaded with size and experience. Some of his top returnees should be Bo McGuffey, Brandon Smith, Brad Wall, and Jason Smith.
Bowling Green (1-0) vs. Scott County (1-0)
Both coaches must have a healthy dose of optimism and pessimism after tonight's defensive slugfest, which Bowling Green won by a score of 7-3. Scott County was on the Purples' 5 yard line with seconds remaining but Jay Bradford intercepted a fourth-down pass by Justin Christman in the end zone to end any chance for Scott County to pull out a victory. Kyle Sledge scored the lone touchdown for Bowling Green with 37 seconds remaining in the first half. Scott County could only manage a 29 yard field goal by Daniel Snodgrass.
While both coaches were probably unhappy with their offensive output, they had to be impressed with a sterling defensive effort. MVP for Bowling Green was Aaron Johnson who rushed for 30 yards and caught four passes for 77 yards. Scott County's Jayce Johnson claimed MVP for his squad as he carried the ball 14 times for 88 yards and intercepted two passes.
