South Laurel (4-6) vs. Paul Laurence Dunbar (7-3) November 3, 2000
Coach Randy Leger’s South Laurel squad has been plagued with inconsistent play this year. The Cardinals have led in most of their games in the second half but have had trouble sustaining the lead. South Laurel scored a major victory against Boyd County. Dustin House, a 5-10 162 pound Sr. QB, has triggered the Cardinal offense this year.
Paul Dunbar appeared to be on cruise control until Madison Centrla beat them 14-9 last week. The Bulldogs have been led this year by QB Chip Franklin who has completed 162 of 279 passes for 2336 yards and 24 TDs. Franklin has also carried the ball 89 times for 556 yards and five scores. RB Corey Dunn has led the ground game with 898 yards on 127 rushing attempts and 12 touchdowns. Derek Talbert has led the receiving corps with 42 receptions for 666 yards and 7 scores. Nathan Jones, who will miss tonight’s game with an injury, is close behind with 40 receptions for 614 yards and 7 touchdowns. Mike Meighan’s squad is led on defense by LB Jacob Koch who has had a monster career at Dunbar.
Dunbar shook off the effects of their loss last week and crushed South Laurel 45-8 in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. A very opportunistic Dunbar registered 8 sacks and held the South Laurel offense in check for the entire evening. The Bulldog defense was led by LB Jacob Koch and DE Rick Jones who each registered two sacks.
Chip Franklin was 5 for 11 through the air for 185 yards and three touchdown passes. Derek Talbert caught two passes for 130 yards and two scores. The 85 yard Franklin to Talbert scoring pass set a Dunbar school record. Corey Dunn ran the ball 11 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns.
