Tates Creek (8-4) vs. Paul Laurence Dunbar (9-3) November 17, 2000
Dunbar defeated Tates Creek 40-9 earlier this year and Dunbar quarterback Chip Franklin riddled the Commodore defense by completing 21 of 29 passes for 417 yards and three scoring strikes. Tates Creek has been on a roll since that game winning six in a row. Coach Mark Willoughby now has a healthy team who has come together both offensively and defensively. Greg Baltimore has rushed for 1340 yards and FB Devin Neal has added 550 yards. QB David Hamilton passed for 975 yards this season to add balance to the Commodore attack.
Chip Franklin has led the Dunbar offense with 2619 yards and 27 TDs through the air. Corey Dunn has added 1000 rushing yards and is a capable receiver coming out of the backfield. Derek Talbert has led the receiving corps with 46 receptions for 805 yards and nine TDs. LB Jacob Koch has led the Dunbar defense another stellar campaign.
The evening had a bizarre beginning as the officiating crew apparently didn’t get their assignments for the game and a substitute crew had to be found. Therefore, on a very cold night the 7:30 start was moved back to 8:50 pm. Tates Creek defeated Paul Dunbar 17-14 to run their streak to three years eliminating the Bulldogs in the playoffs. Tates Creek utilized a strong defense and their traditional crushing running attack to win the game.
Tates Creek was clinging to a 10-7 lead late in the fourth quarter and was facing a fourth down play when David Hamilton hit Joe Dicks with a 26 yard TD pass with 1:41 remaining on the clock. Dunbar fought back with Chip Franklin passing 25 yards to Corey Dunn for a TD with 37 seconds remaining to pull the Bulldogs within 3, 17-14. Dunbar’s onside kick attempt failed and Tates Creek advances to the state 4A semi-finals.
Greg Baltimore led the Tates Creek ground attack with 195 yards on 28 carries. Devin Neal and John Clay combined for an additional 102 rushing yards. Corey Dunn led the Dunbar ground game with 119 yards on 19 carries. Chip Franklin was 12 for 32 for 133 yards and one TD pass. This had to be a frustrating evening for Dunbar coach Mike Meighan as his receivers had a lot of dropped passes.
