East Jessamine (0-1) vs. Lafayette (1-0) August 24, 2001
Coach Paul Roher's East Jessamine Jaguars got off to a rocky start last week dropping a 42-6 decision to Bell County. The Jags lost seven fumbles in the game. The East Jessamine offense should be led by running backs Aaron Creech and Josh Burton. First year Lafayette head coach Make Harmon got off to a great start with a 33-14 win at Pikeville. The Generals were led by RB Elrazor Sharp who rambled for 277 yards and four touchdowns in the opening victory.
Lafayette's Elrazor Sharp went to the bench after the first quarter with an ankle injury after gaining only 33 yards on nine carries. However, Lafayette had plenty of weapons available to defeat East Jessamine by a score of 28-12. East Jessamine opened the scoring with an Aaron Creech 15 yard TD run. Lafayette answered with a 63 yard scoring strike from Justin Albrecht to Spencer Fain to start a 28-0 scoring run. 5-6 150 pound So. Spencer Fain rushed for 68 yards on 14 carries and one touchdown. He also caught four passes for 91 yards and one score. 5-7 215 So. FB Cecil Jones ran for 59 yards on 14 carries and scored twice. JR. QB Justin Albrecht passed for 142 yards and one TD on 7 of 12 through the air. East Jessamine was led by running backs Aaron Creech and Josh Burton Creech rushed for 82 yards on 11 carries and Burton added 64 yards on 16 carries with each scoring a touchdown.
Lafayette also had some highlights on defense with LB Roger Lewis making some big hits and Jake Loveland intercepting two passes. Bilal El-Amin had a big fumble recovery on the East Jessamine 8 yard line that led to Spencer Fain's 6 yard TD run.
Two wins does not a season make but Coach Mike Harmon who was an assistant coach at Tates Creek has brought a winning attitude to Lafayette and the Generals are playing sound fundamental football. The Generals will probably encounter problems with large, physical teams this year but with (by my count) only eight seniors on the squad the future looks bright for the Generals and their young head coach.
