Class A Championship
Danville (12-2) vs. Newport Central Catholic (13-1) November 30, 2001
This is a rematch of last year's Class A Championship. Danville won the title last year with a 23-9 victory over NewCath. He won a title in 1984 and was state runner-up in '85, '86, and '00.
Danville has been led through the air this year by Jr. QB Adam Schott who has completed 137 of 224 passes for 2188 yards and 24 touchdowns. His favorite targets have been Wesley Cloud, Jeremy Vaught, and Binky Mays with 27, 22, and 20 receptions respectively. Cloud led the Admiral receivers with seven TD receptions. The defense was led by 6-3 220 pound LB Tyler Barto with 132 tackles. 5-10 170 pound defensive end Robby Grimm recorded 100 tackles.
Danville survived a second half rally by NewCath to claim a 14-13 victory and another state title. This was a tale of two games as Danville totally dominated the first half and led 14-0 at the half. They got on the scoreboard on a 4 yard pass from Adam Schott to Jeremy Vaught, and a 57 yard TD run by Kelvin Turner. The Admiral defense held NewCath to 63 first half yards. The second half was another story as NewCath outgained Danville 180 yards to 69. NewCath scored on a Steve Everson two yard run and Matt Heister conversion in the third quarter. NewCath pulled to within 1, 14-13 on a 7 yard TD pass from Jeff Smith to Kevin Smith but Heister missed the conversion. NewCath had one last chance but Smith's pass from the Danville 35 was intercepted on the eight yard line by Wesley Cloud to end the threat.
