Paul Laurence Dunbar (4-0) vs. Tates Creek (3-1) September 21, 2001
Coach Mark Peach's Dunbar Bulldogs come in undefeated and have been led by the running of Corey Dunn (969 yards) and the passing of QB Josh Ellis (679 yards). Coach Mark Willoughby's Tates Creek Commodore squad will attempt to control the tempo and make it a physical game. Tates Creek squads are noted for their solid line play and this year's team is no exception.
Dunbar survived a determined Tates Creek squad to win a 13-7 decision in overtime. Tates Creek established the tempo they wanted but Dunbar was able to match the Commodores in a very physical, defense-dominated contest. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime but neither team could find the end zone in the second half. Dunbar's Markell Webb intercepted a pass late in the game and returned it to the Tates Creek 27 yard line. Wes Strunk missed a 44 yard field goal attempt with seconds remaining and the teams went to overtime.
Dunbar won the toss and chose to go on defense. The Bulldog defense held and Tates Creek's Joe Ales missed a 22 yard field goal attempt. Dunbar took over on offense and on their second play Aaron Mason scored on a nine yard run. Dunbar was led tonight by Corey Dunn who rushed for 132 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries. Dunn was shaken up and left the game late in the final period. Aaron Mason rushed for 67 yards and had three receptions for 38 yards. QB Josh Ellis completed 8 of 15 passes for 90 yards. Quincy Taylor and Trae Hughes rushed for 80 and 77 yards respectively. Defensive lineman Michael Yocum and linebacker Bobby Agboke had excellent defensive games for Tates Creek.
