Raceland (4-2) vs. Lexington Christian Academy (1-5) October 4, 2001
The Raceland Rams of Coach Randy Vanderhoof bring a 4-2 record to Lexington tonight to face the Lexington Christian Academy Eagles coached by Dave Garrett. The Rams will be led by a very effective passing QB Sam McKee. The Rams are coming off a district loss to Paris. LCA probably had their worst outing of the year last week in a 44-3 loss to Nicholas County. Robert Scates was switched to quarterback three games ago and has responded by connecting on 42 of 80 passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns. 6-3 TE David Toth has caught 17 passes for 228 yards and five touchdowns. Mark Gotcher has notched six field goals of over 40 yards this year.
LCA held on to defeat Raceland 24-22 tonight to notch their second victory in their inaugural football campaign. The air literally rained footballs tonight as Raceland QB Sam McKee passed for 344 yards and two touchdowns on 29 of 55 passes. LCA QB Robert Scates passed for 293 yards and two touchdowns on 19 of 46 passes.
LCA took a 21-9 lead at halftime on the strength of two Scates TD passes -- 75 yards to David Toth and 49 yards to Justin Peterson. Tyler Harris also scored on a 3 yard run. Raceland got their points on three field goals of 21, 34, and 43 yards by Aaron Pettrey.
Raceland came alive in the second half as McKee threw two 12 yard TD passes to Matt Boyd. LCA scored on a 34 yard field goal by Mark Gotcher. Robert Scates also made a big play on defense, breaking up a pass that would have kept a Raceland drive alive late in the game. This was especially important considering the long-distance range of Ram kicker Aaron Pettrey.
Pettrey and Travis Roark each caught nine passes for Raceland for 109 and 103 yards respectively. Justin Peterson and David Toth caught seven passes each for LCA for 127 and 119 yards respectively. These stats are not official but were recorded by me personally and should be close. This game took over three hours to complete but was very entertaining and few fans headed for the exit before the final horn.Scoring Summary
