Scott County (3-0) vs. Henry Clay (3-1) September 15, 2001

Henry Clay defeated Scott County 18-14 in an exciting albeit mistake-marred game.  Coach Sam Simpson's Henry Clay Blue Devils had two touchdowns called back on penalties and lost a fumble in the end zone.  Coach Jim McKee's Scott County Cardinals outgained Henry Clay 327-277 but lost three fumbles and had one pass intercepted.

Scott County took a 14-6 halftime lead on two touchdown runs by Jayce Johnson.  Henry Clay closed to within 2, 14-12 on a 1 yard run by QB David Buchanan with 3:02 remaining in the third quarter.  With less than two minutes left in the third quarter, Aaron Ballard separated a Scott County running back from the ball and teammate Antuan Jones scooped up the ball and raced 64 yards for what proved to be the decisive score.  Henry Clay relied on their defense to save the victory as Scott County reached the Henry Clay 20 yard line with 40 seconds remaining on the clock before Henry Clay shut them down.

The Scott County offense was led by their two superb running backs Jayce Johnson and Chris TravisJohnson had 27 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns.  Travis picked up 83 yards on 15 carries.  QB Chris Cronin completed 8 of 16 passes for 93 yards.  Henry Clay was led by Isaiah Stewart with 103 yards on 11 rushing attempts.  QB David Buchanan completed 10 of 16 passes for 89 yards.

This is an extremely tough district with Paul Dunbar, Scott County, Henry Clay, Lafayette, Tates Creek, Woodford County, and Bryan Station.  While both these teams have difficult games the rest of the year, they have the talent and coaching to make a lot of noise in the playoffs.
