Tates Creek (9-3) vs. Henry Clay (10-2) November 16, 2001

These teams met on October 5th with Tates Creek claiming a 17-14 victory on a last second field goal by Joe Ales.  The game was played in the rain and mud.  Tonight's game should play out on a dry field with the victor advancing to the state 4A semifinals.

Coach Mark Willoughby's Tates Creek Commodores have been led on the ground by Trae Hughes, who has rushed for 1074 yards.  FB Bobby Agboke added 454 yards and is a powerful inside runner.  QB David Hamilton has completed 68 of 156 passes for 1157 yards and seven TDs.  His favorite receiver has been 6-4 Sr. Patrick Gray, who has caught 27 passes for 557 yards.  The Commodore defense has been led by linemen 6-2 332 pound Sr. Maurice Walker, 6-1 240 pound Sr. George Jones, and linebackers 6-0 190 pound Sr. Larry Brown, and 5-10 190 pound Sr. Bobby Agboke

Coach Sam Simpson's Henry Clay Blue Devils have been led on the ground by Isaiah Stewart with 894 yards.  Marcus Commodore and Demetric Blackburn have added 692 and 683 yards respectively.  Commodore has also added 459 receiving yards.  QB David Buchanan has completed 84 of 145 passes for 1164 yards and eight TDs.  The Blue Devil defense has been led by 6-0 215 pound Sr. linebacker Will Wheeler and 6-3 185 pound Sr. defensive end Chris Dabney.

The discussion had gone on all week whether Tates Creek would be able to defeat Henry Clay again, especially on a dry field.  Tates Creek was up to the task and defeated Henry Clay 26-23 tonight in overtime in an excellent high school game.  Henry Clay took a 7-0 lead on a Demetric Blackburn 26 yard run in the first quarter.  Tates Creek's Joe Ales pulled his team to within 4, 7-3, on a 30 yard field goal.  Aaron Ballard connected on a 31 yard field goal with nine seconds remaining in the half to give Henry Clay a 10-3 lead at halftime.  Tates Creek recovered a Henry Clay fumble at the Tates Creek 48 and David Hamilton completed the drive with a five yard TD run.  Joe Ales' conversion tied the score 10-10.  Aaron Ballard kicked a 26 yard field goal with 49 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give the Blue Devils a 13-0 lead.  Tates Creek took a 17-13 lead in the fourth quarter on a 30 yard run by Trae Hughes.  Henry Clay reclaimed a 20-17 lead on a three yard pass from David Buchanan to Demetric BlackburnJoe Ales tied the score 20-20 for the Commodores on a 29 yard field goal with 1:17 remaining on the clock.  Henry Clay's Aaron Ballard missed on a 41 yard field goal attempt with seven seconds remaining and the game went into overtime.

Henry Clay got the ball first but on the 25 yard line because of a dead ball foul that had occurred on the last play of regulation.  The Blue Devils had to settle for a 20 yard field goal by Aaron Ballard to make the score 23-20.  Tates Creek took over on the 10 yard line and on the second play Trae Hughes ran seven yards for the score and a Tates Creek 26-23 victory.  Tates Creek was led tonight by Trae Hughes who carried the ball 25 times for 90 yards and two scores.  Henry Clay was led by Demetric Blackburn who gained 100 yards on five carries.  David Buchanan completed 14 of 20 passes for 122 yards and one TD pass.  Buchanan had some nice scrambles buying time so he could complete passes.  Tates Creek's David Hamilton was great on the option, especially on the 30 yard run by Hughes where he pitched the ball to Hughes a split second before he was hit.  Congratulations to Henry Clay on a fine season and good luck to the Commodores as they travel to Louisville to take on Trinity.
