Henry Clay (4-2) vs. Woodford County (4-2) October 3, 2002

Both teams enter tonight with a 4-2 record and both teams have a district loss so tonight's game is a key matchup.  Coach Sam Simpson's Henry Clay Blue Devils are coming off a 34-13 win over Bryan Station.  The Henry Clay ground attack has been led by Isaiah Stewart with 436 yards and six touchdowns.  Demetric Blackburn has chipped in with 300 yards and two scores.  WR Aubrey White has emerged as a big play receiver with 29 receptions for 462 yards and five touchdowns. 

The Woodford County Yellowjackets, coached by Dan Cassity, are coming off a 34-15 loss to Lafayette last week.  The Yellowjackets were guilty of seven turnovers in the game but hope to rebound this week.  Woodford County has a solid senior class with 18 seniors on the roster.  Coach Cassity has gotten consistent play from 6-1 185 pound Sr. QB Eric SobolewskiMichael Woolfork gained 91 yards on the ground and scored a TD in last week's game to pace the ground attack. 

Woodford County claimed a huge district win tonight by defeating Henry Clay 27-21.  Henry Clay led 7-0 on a 33 yard pass from David Buchanan to Bennett Hoefer after one quarter.  Woodford County tied the score 7-7 on an eight yard run by Eric Sobolewski.  Henry Clay regained the lead on a Buchanan seven yard run.  The Yellowjackets closed to within one, 14-13, on a nine yard pass from Sobolewski to P. J. Anthony.  Henry Clay scored on a one yard run by Isaiah Stewart to make the score 21-13 at halftime.  The third quarter was all Woodford County as they scored on a one yard run by Mike Rutoskey and a 75 yard run by Lionel Thornton.  This was a perfectly executed play as Sobolewski held the ball until the last possible second before pitching to the trailing back who took the play long distance for the score.  The score was Woodford County 27-21 at the end of three quarters and they played excellent defense in the final period to ensure the victory.  Henry Clay held a 354-345 edge in total offense but had two costly fumbles while Woodford County had no turnovers tonight. 

Woodford County was led by Lionel Thornton with 112 yards and a TD on only five carries.  Sobolewski did an excellent job on the option gaining 58 yards on the ground and 69 yards through the air.  The victors had several heroes on defense, led by 210 pound Mike Rutoskey with eight solo and three assisted tackles.  6-2 260 pound DL Ryan Oakman had an excellent game while Ethan Buell and Chase Cobb were credited with fumble recoveries.  Henry Clay was led tonight by David Buchanan who completed 10 of 14 passes for 175 yards and one TD.  Aubrey White caught four passes for 66 yards and Isaiah Stewart carried the ball 11 times for 65 yards.  Buchanan also carried the ball 13 times for 42 yards and a score.  The Blue Devil defense was led by Bennett Hoefer, a 160 pound senior, who had four solo and eight assisted tackles.  190 pound Jr. LB Josh Wright added four solo and seven assisted tackles while Greg Conner, a 5-10 252 pound Sr. NG added five solo and three assisted tackles.
