Louisville Trinity (13-0) vs. Paul L. Dunbar (9-4) November 29, 2002
Coach Bob Beatty's Trinity Shamrocks come to town as the unbeaten defending state champion, ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 5 in the nation. Brian Brohm, their star QB, recently appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Brohm, a 6-4 190 pound Jr., has thrown for 36 scoring strikes while having only one pass intercepted. TaShawn McBroom has caught 63 passes for 1041 yards and nine touchdowns. Norm Elbert has rushed for 1146 yards and DeQuese May has been a threat both on the ground and as a receiver. The Shamrocks have outscored their opponents 539-79 and the defense has shutout five opponents and held two other opponents to a field goal.
Coach Mark Peach's Dunbar Bulldogs have been led this season by QB Josh Ellis who has passed for 3052 yards and 30 scoring strikes. Aaron Mason has 957 receiving yards and 11 TD receptions while TE Clint Keller has 892 receiving yards with 10 scoring receptions. So. Bobby Vyverberg has come on strong late in the season to lead the Bulldog ground attack with 871 yards.
Trinity lived up to their advanced billing and rolled to a 35-0 halftime lead on their way to a 49-7 victory over Dunbar. Dunbar began in a promising fashion as they drove to the Trinity seven yard line on their first possession but a fourth down pass was intercepted. The Shamrock offense clicked on all cylinders all evening while Dunbar could not get their vaunted passing attack on track. Dunbar was further hampered when QB Josh Ellis suffered a knee injury which limited his effectiveness against an aggressive Trinity defense. Trinity held a 420-204 yard edge in total offense.
Trinity was led tonight by QB Brian Brohm who completed 13 of 17 passes for 253 yards and four scoring strikes. TaShawn McBroom caught five passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. McBroom showed his exceptional speed as he caught a short pass from Brohm and raced 80 yards for a score. DeQuese May led the ground attack with 93 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carriesy Dunbar was led tonight by Bobby Vyverberg who carried the ball 14 times for 90 yards and scored the Bulldogs' only touchdown with 1:29 remaining in the game.
