Paul L. Dunbar (7-4) vs. Scott County (11-0) November 15, 2002
Paul Dunbar comes into tonight's game looking for revenge. Scott County defeated Dunbar 28-27 three weeks ago and tonight's game should be a battle. Dunbar has a balanced offense with QB Josh Ellis leading the aerial attack. His favorite receivers have been TE Clint Keller and WR Aaron Mason. The ground attack is in the capable hands of Markell Webb and Bobby Vyverberg. DL Rick Jones has anchored the Dunbar defense.
Coach Jim McKee's Scott County Cardinals have a punishing ground attack led by Phillip Ray, Percy Hargrove, and Ted Sberna. QB Chris Cronin is a slick field general and when he goes to the air his favorite target is WR Ryan Rennecker. The Cardinals have an opportunistic defense and have been especially adept at blocking kicks this season. The winner of this game will advance to the region final next week against the winner of the Henry Clay-Woodford County game.
Dunbar utilized the clutch passing of Josh Ellis and a career rushing night (174 yards) by Bobby Vyverberg to defeat Scott County by a score of 33-21. Dunbar held a 26-7 lead early in the third quarter until they started having misadventures on their punts. The Cardinals cut the deficit to 26-14 after Dustin Current blocked a punt and Jason Howard returned it 16 yards for a score. The next Dunbar punt attempt was near disastrous as the snap was not handled cleanly and Scott County intercepted a pass attempt on the Dunbar 25. Scott County later faced a fourth-and-one on the Dunbar 4 when Cronin completed a pass to Phillip Ray on the one yard line. However, a penalty was called on Scott County for offensive pass interference giving Dunbar possession of the ball. The Cardinals never got any closer as the teams each scored a touchdown in the final quarter.
Dunbar was led tonight by QB Josh Ellis who completed 12 of 18 passes for 166 yards and three scoring strikes. Thurman Clay caught three passes for 78 yards and TD receptions of 18 and 49 yards. Bobby Vyverberg navigated the muddy field for 174 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. The Dunbar defense held Scott County to 261 yards and was led by Rick Jones, Ryan Combs, and Mark Wethington with 11 tackles each. The Bulldogs also recovered a fumble and intercepted three passes. Dunbar held a 366-261 edge in total offense.
Scott County was led by Ted Sberna, who carried the ball eight times for 82 yards. Chris Cronin was 7 of 13 for 95 yards through the air but was picked off three times. Ryan Rennecker had four receptions for 62 yards. The Cardinal defense was led by Matt Wells and Josh Moore with 11 and 10 tackles respectively.
