Tates Creek (2-2) vs. Paul L. Dunbar (2-2) September 27, 2002

Tates Creek over the years has relied on great line play and old fashioned "smash-mouth" football.  However, the Commodores are off to a slow start this year and Coach Mark Willoughby will attempt to regroup his team after a loss to Madison Central two weeks ago.  The disturbing aspect about that game to the Tates Creek faithful was that the Creekers were outmuscled at the line of scrimmage.  Tray Hughes has been a bright spot for Tates Creek as he has rushed for 656 yards and seven touchdowns in the first four games.

Mark Peach's Dunbar Bulldogs also hope to rebound after losing their district opener to Woodford County last week.  Dunbar's Achilles heel this season has been turnovers as they have committed 11 miscurs so far.  QB Josh Ellis has completed 65 of 102 passes for 1066 yards and eight TD passes in his first four games.  RB Aaron Mason has also been productive as he has tallied close to 700 all purpose yards this season.

Dunbar made two key defensive stops late in the game to overcome a 190 yard rushing effort by Tray Hughes on their way to a 28-21 victory over Tates Creek.  Tates Creek took an early 6-0 lead on a 32 yard run by Tray Hughes but Dunbar responded with a three touchdown flurry to take a 21-6 lead with 22 seconds remaining in the half.  Tates Creek cut the lead to seven, 21-14, on a 90 yard kickoff return by Quincy Taylor shortly before intermission.  Tates Creek tied the score 21-21 in the third quarter on a one yard run by Michael Yocum.  Dunbar regained the lead 28-21 on a two yard run by Markell Webb in a drive highlighted by an Aaron Mason 52 yard run to the Tates Creek 11 yard line.  The final period remained scoreless as the Dunbar defense stepped up to ensure the victory.

Dunbar held a 357-316 edge in total offense.  They were led tonight by Josh Ellis who completed 12 of 24 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown.  Aaron Mason carried the ball 12 times for 102 yards and a score.  He also caught four passes for 59 yards and another TD.  The defense was led by Mark Wethington with six solo and six assisted tackles.  Aaron Mason added six solo stops and four assisted tackles.  Rick Jones chipped in with three solo tackles and 10 assisted tackles.  The Tates Creek offense was led by Tray Hughes who carried the ball 23 times for 190 yards and a touchdown.  Quincy Taylor added 55 yards on nine carries and returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score.  The Commodore defense was led by Daniel Covington with five solo and three assisted tackles.  Jamon Hess was responsible for four solo stops and two assisted tackles.
