Whitley County (5-5) vs. Scott County (10-0) November 8, 2002
Coach Mike Campbell's Whitley County Colonels enter the playoff as a fourth seed and ended the regular season with a 55-6 loss to Pulaski Southwestern. The Whitley County offense is led by 5-9 149 pound Jr. halfback Josh Adkins who has rushed for over 700 yards.
The Scott County Cardinals, coached by Jim McKee, finished the regular season undefeated and claimed the district championship. The Scott County ground attack has been led by 5-11 177 pound Jr. HB Phillip Ray (82 carries for 609 yards and 6 TDs), 5-9 220 pound So. FB Percy Hargrove (94 carries for 476 yards and 6 TDs), and 5-9 159 pound So. HB Ted Sberna (62 carries for 475 yards and 6 TDs). 5-11 150 pound Jr. QB Chris Cronin has completed 68 of 124 passes for 905 yards and nine scoring strikes. 5-11 151 pound Sr. WR Ryan Rennecker has caught 44 passes for 630 yards and seven scores. The opportunistic Cardinal defense has recovered 21 fumbles, intercepted nine passes, and blocked 11 kicks.
Scott County took a 35-0 halftime advantage led by Percy Hargrove's three TD runs on their way to a 42-12 victory over Whitley County. Whitley County has a lot of underclassmen and fans should be encouraged by their second half performance. There was absolutely no quit in Mike Campbell's squad tonight as they played very competitively in the second half. Scott County continues to roll and they were led tonight by Percy Hargrove, who carried the ball 16 times for 125 yards and three scores. QB Chris Cronin completed eight of 11 passes for 121 yards and one scoring strike. Whitley County was led by Josh Adkins who carried the ball 33 times for 150 yards and a score. QB Josh Bowman completed 8 of 18 passes for 86 yards. Scott County held a 332-286 yard edge in total offense.
