Week Two in Review - September 1, 2003

©2003 by Ron Harrison

Boyle County  46   Henry Clay   7
The No. 1 ranked team in 3A continues to impress as they have outscored their first two opponents by a combined score of 81-7.  QB Brandon Smith passed for 180 yards and four scoring strikes tonight and an opportunistic Boyle County defense intercepted four passes.

Mason County  67   Montgomery County   0
Mason County appears to be taking the move from 2A to 3A in stride as QB Dustin Grutza threw for 286 yards and six touchdowns.

Scott County  48   Seneca   40
Scott County rebounded from a season opening loss to St. Xavier and rolled up 469 yards of offense in a big win tonight.  C. T. Trumbo rushed for 122 yards and three TDs plus a long kickoff return for another score.  Seneca's Andy Clark completed 26 of 38 passes for 351 yards and four TD passes.

Breathitt County  42   Perry County Central   14
Defending Class 2A champ Breathitt County rebounded from an opening game thrashing at the hands of Mason County to roll up 575 yards on the ground to gain the victory.

Danville and Mayfield are ranked as two of the top contenders for the Class A crown and they both pitched shutouts tonight as Danville defeated Lincoln County 50-0 and Mayfield defeated Marshall County 46-0.

Newport Central Catholic 33    Newport  12
Coach Bob Schneider starts his 38th year of coaching with another victory.  Kevin Smith led NCC with 289 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries.

Madison Central  12    Paul Dunbar   7
Coach Kenny Turner made his debut last week as the head coach at Madison Central with a victory over Bryan Station and his team made a last second stop at their own one yard line to give him his second consecutive victory over a Lexington school.  For a complete write-up of this game, click [here]

Paducah Tilghman  20   Ballard   14  (OT)
Tilghman opened the season with an impressive victory over Henry Clay and pulled out a victory in overtime to go 2-0.

Corbin was ranked No. 2 in the pre-season Class 2A polls and rolled up another big victory tonight with a 51-0 win over North Laurel.

St. Xavier is off to a great start, opening with a big win over Scott County and defeating Cincinnati Moeller 30-17 this week.

Tates Creek's Daniel Covington should have a favorite number--"90".  Covington returned a kickoff 90 yards for a TD against Clark County last week and duplicated the effort with another 90 yard TD burst on a kickoff return in a 21-0 victory over North Hardin this week.

Male  31   Hopkinsville   14
Male proves there is life after Michael Bush as they defeated a good Hopkinsville team.

Bowling Green  53   Oldham County   14
Four backs rushed for over 100 yards each to lead Bowling Green to victory.

Who would have thought that Trinity would be 0-2 to start the season? The Shamrocks opened the season with a 17-13 loss to Montgomery Bell Academy (TN) and 24-17 this week to Cincinnati St. Xavier.  Trinity QB Brian Brohm completed 19 of 30 passes for 149 yards with one touchdown and an interception.  Brohm also carried the ball 13 times for 57 yards and a TD run.  Make no mistake about it, these were two very good teams and to put it in perspective, Trinity last lost to a Kentucky team September 21, 2001 (Louisville St. Xavier).

September 5th "gotta be there" games will include St. Xavier vs. Lexington Catholic, Manual vs. Trinity, Mayfield vs. Hopkinsville, and Boyle County vs. Danville.
