East Jessamine (5-0) vs. Lexington Catholic (4-1) October 3, 2003
David Hensley's East Jessamine Jaguars roll into town with a 5-0 record for a game with Lexington Catholic that could determine the district championship. The Jaguar offense has plenty of weapons including 6-4 240 pound Sr. QB Patrick Hunt, 5-10 180 pound Sr. RB Wes Coleman, and 6-2 192 pound Sr. WR Brandon Mason. They have the luxury of running behind a huge offensive line. The defense, which has given up less than 100 yards per game, is led by 6-2 230 pound Sr. LB Steven Isaacs.
Bob Sphire's Lexington Catholic Knights have only lost once this season, to Scott County. The Knights bring a lot of offensive weapons, including 6-3 180 pound So. QB Justin Burke. 6-0 180 pound Sr. RB Phillip Martin possesses game-breaking speed and is also a threat as a receiver. Two of Burke's favorite targets have been wide receivers 6-0 160 pound Jr. Tyler Hinkel and 6-3 173 pound Jr. Kevin Vogelsang.
Lexington Catholic raced out to a 21-0 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first half and survived a furious rally by East Jessamine to claim a 28-21 victory. East Jessamine cut the lead to 21-7 with 44 seconds remaining in the half on a one yard run by Patrick Hunt. East Jessamine's Brandon Mason then intercepted a Justin Burke pass and the Jaguars were in business again on the Lexington Catholic 46 yard line. Wes Coleman scored on a 44 yard run to narrow the score to 21-14 with six seconds ramaining in the half.
East Jessamine finally tied the score 21-21 on a two yard run late in the third quarter. Phillip Martin scored on a 15 yard run with 6:54 remaining in the final period in what proved to be the winning TD for Lexington Catholic. East Jessamine had one more opportunity on offense and was on the Lexington Catholic 20 yard line as time expired.
East Jessamine held a 358-272 yard advantage in total offense and held a decided edge in possession time 33:59-14:01. The Jaguar's showed a lot of determination battling back from a 21-0 deficit. East Jessamine was led by Wes Coleman with 181 yards and a TD on 21 carries. Coleman is deceptively strong and gained many of his yards on second effort. Lexington Catholic was led by Justin Burke, who completed 13 of 23 passes for 213 yards and two scores. Tyler Hinkel caught six passes for 99 yards. Kevin Lattner had a stellar evening on defense, recording 10 solo and seven assisted tackles.
