Lexington Catholic (2-0) vs. Scott County (2-1) September 12, 2003

So. QB Justin Burke got off to a great start for coach Bob Sphire's Lexington Catholic Knights.  Burke has completed 34 of 49 passes for 541 yards and five scoring strikes.  The Knights opened the season with a victory over Prestonsburg and followed up with an impressive 19-14 win over St. Xavier.  The defense has been led by linebackers Kevin Lattner and Brandon Logan

Coach Jim McKee's Scott County Cardinals opened the season with a 38-6 loss to St. Xavier but rebounded with victories over Seneca and Clark County.  The Scott County offense has a capable running attack led by Ted Sberna and C. T. Trumbo.  The Cardinal offense is directed by a veteran QB in Chris Cronin

Scott County erased a 22-19 halftime deficit and shut down Lexington Catholic the rest of the game on their way to a 45-22 victory.  The Cardinal offensive line did an excellent job tonight, opening up holes for the Scott County backs to gain 297 yards on 60 rushing attempts.  Lexington Catholic held a narrow 338-330 yard margin on total offense but lost three fumbles and had a pass intercepted.  Scott County's ground attack allowed the Cardinals to maintain a 34:42-13:18 advantage on ball possession time. 

Scott County was led on the ground tonight by Ted Sberna who carried the ball 15 times for 121 yards and a touchdown.  Percy Hargrove gained 80 yards and scored a touchdown on 20 rushing attempts.  QB Chris Cronin was a jack-of-all-trades tonight as he ran for 24 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries and completed seven of eight passes for 38 yards and two scoring strikes.  Cronin also contributed on defense as he recorded two solo and one assisted tackle plus being credited with a fumble recovery and an interception.  Derek Ritchie led the Cardinal defense with seven solo and three assisted tackles. 

Lexington Catholic was led by Justin Burke who completed 19 of 35 passes for 314 yards and three TD passes.  Burke also gained 35 yards on three rushing attempts.  Kevin Vogelsang caught six passes for 81 yards.  The defense was led by Brandon Logan with eight solo and six assisted tackles.  Kevin Lattner added with seven solo and three assisted tackles.
